The Newcastle team v West Ham has just been confirmed.

Gayle ruled out through injury with Joselu taking his place.

Rolando Aaron was also a doubt but he only gets a place on the bench despite impressing against Forest in midweek.

So only the one change to the team that lost at Huddersfield.

With Karl Darlow injured, Freddie Woodman steps up to the bench.

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Elliot, Manquillo, Lascelles, Mbemba, Clark, Ritchie, Merino, Hayden, Atsu, PΓ©rez, Joselu

and the Subs:

Woodman, Gamez, Saivet, Diame, Murphy, Aarons, Mitrovic

Compare Rafa’s side to this one he may have fancied selecting.

  • Anita kick up the Hoop

The formation just doesn’t work .. and Perez isn’t capable of linking the midfield and attack BUT at least Gayle isn’t involved so we at least have a chance of the ball sticking up front

    • Clarko

“The formation just doesn’t work”, hmmmmm…….

      • Anita kick up the Hoop

Are you blind are just dopey? … he played two up front today .. Perez played alongside Joselu AND the big difference was Gayle wasn’t running around like a fart on the breeze and the ball stuck allowing the team to play further up the field … which has been my point all along .

        • Clarko

He played the same formation he has played since he took over.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

So you’re going with dopey then ?
Perez clearly played as a striker today … he’s played behind the lone striker when selected and for long spells Rafa used Diame as the attacking midfielder.. are you seriously telling me that was the same formation today because if you are you know even less than I’d assumed … and I already thought you were a large male hen.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

i watched the game & you are right about Perez

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

I know .. this clarko character is a thick as mince but what an ego the pork sword has about himself

          • Clarko

            Again, same formation.

          • Anita kick up the Hoop

            Embarrassing yourself ..again

          • Albert Stubbins

He was given free reign yesterday but was ineffective until last ten minutes when spammers were chasing game. He was on left and right and sometimes central playing off main striker. He got about pitch but as always lacks composure when in good positions. Hard to find a position he can be generally effective in. Can’t play when chasing a game. Maybe useful to bring on when winning in last ten minutes. Can kill a game off when he has space.

  • Soldier

that starting line up shows exactly why Rafa is in despair

    • Clarko

He bought seven of the starting eleven.

      • Soldier

i know he did but as he`s stated they weren`t his 1st choice

        • Clarko

If they aren’t good enough, don’t buy them, plenty of other options available. All of this moaning and complaining over missing out on Tammy Abraham two months ago, it’s pathetic and not valid excuse.

          • Danimal

I suspect he has signed the best he was able to sign. In other words “allowed to sign”.

          • Clarko

            Wrong.

          • Danimal

Apologies you are correct, as always. He could have signed Perez from Arsenal or Andre Gray from Burnley, transfer fees and wages no problem. Plenty of options available as you say. But instead he chose to sign some cheaper journeymen and Championship prospects, all coincidentally on lower wages, because he wanted to make his own job much more difficult and really test himself. How silly of me not to realise this, after all what possible reason could I have to suspect penny-pinching after the flamboyant, ambitious and exciting way the club has been run for the last ten years?

          • Clarko

            Wrong.

          • Danimal

            You’re funny.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            He`s got new batteries in

          • Clarko

            You’re wrong.

          • Danimal

            Yes you are.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            Correct

  • Mike Adam

Not who I would like to have seen start. I will continue to hope, especially today with limited subs we have, that at some point in this game we see Murphy, Aarons, Mitro as the 3 substitutes and that we have left Joselu in and switched to 4-4-2 !!!

  • Rev

Come on Jos … hat trick! Otherwise its going to be diame on for perez ans Saivet for Hayden after 70 min whether we are winning, losing or drawing. Yes we get it Rafa … you want 11 players who can play this formation and win games and you are not going to change things until you get your way. FFS, at home, proper 6 pointer and we are setting up to play Barca away

  • Alex

    Perez??????? 😭

  • foggy

Just keep your eye on Elliott when west ham have a corner. He’s like a rabbit stuck in headlights. The sooner a proper keeper is signed the better, along with a proper striker, a proper creative midfielder and a proper left back.

  • Danimal

Sean Longstaff doing very well at Blackpool. Fingers crossed he’s good enough for a recall in January. Or is he away for the season?

  • ToonNL

Joselu already giving the best target man display we’ve seen since Ba’s time at center forward…

  • JoΓ£o Gabriel B S Santos

What the [email protected]#$ is happening with Elliot????

    • Jimblag23

I think I’ve missed something if Krul is deemed worse than Elliot.
Before he got injured Krul was head and shoulders our best keeper, now he’s apparently the worse keeper at the club??

  • Cuh

    Live stream anyone?

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

sports world if you have Kodi

      • Cuh

Thanks. Couldn’t get any. Think it’s my device that’s the problem

    • ToonNL

its as easy as googling premierleague live

  • Jimblag23

Lascelles grappling in the box is only a matter of time until we’re punished.
Get in there Joselu though, more in he 2nd half now then. πŸ’ͺ🏼

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

well taken goal the lads are working their socks off, we still need a number 10 Perez is just awful

  • Steve Smith

Ritchie looking like a winger version of Kante. Constantly winning the ball back and connecting play.

  • Cuh

Well we didn’t sign any new players between the Huddersfield game and today!

  • Danimal

Delighted to see Mitrovic on the scoresheet. Confidence booster.

    • Wor Lass

Agreed – but it`s probs boosting his confidence for someone else. (I hope not)

      • Danimal

Easy to say right now but I’m one of the people who wants him to stay.

    • glassjawsh-got-banned

I’m waiting until the window closes to buy a Mitro shirt…

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  • Wor Lass

We`re doomed … oh! … hang on. What`s happening?! Well, it`s great stuff. Not exactly expected but long may it continue!!!

  • Wor Lass

Prutton`ll be taking all the credit for motivating the lads.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      Tossa`s i had 3-1

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

that`s Slavering Bilic on the dole come Monday & a win like that means Rafa won`t be chucking it in, Yet !

    • Jezza

Bilic will be under a bit of pressure no doubt but he won’t be sacked just yet. I’m just waiting to see what happens with Rafa. Friday will be the crucial day.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

i watched the match & they all worked hard but we still need some added quality, Perez & Diame are really poor i`d sell them if i could

        • Cuh

          Perez was poor today?!

          • Albert Stubbins

Apart from last ten minutes yes. Very poor. He is always poor chasing a game. Does ok when he has space when opposition is chasing game. Lacks strength and pace. Needs to go imo.

      • Jimblag23

One reason they’ll give Slaven more time is the fact the club lumped him with a load of away matches at the start of the season.
Would be harsh to hang him out to dry like that.

        • Jezza

Yes that was my reasoning. They’re not going to sack him before he’s had a couple of home games. Utterly farcical siuation West Ham starting with three away games due to stupid athletics. Just another sad facet of modern football.

          • Albert Stubbins

            And he’s spent 40 million!!

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

West Ham defense is an absolute mess. This was more about what they did wrong than what we did right. Lucky the points still count the same either way!

    • Benmagpie

Admittedly West Ham were bad, but to be fair we were much improved. Chasing everything, closing down, some great performances.

      • Clarko

        More of the latter.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Merino looks like the real deal, great game

  • Steve Pearce

Our three new signings combined brilliantly to score the first goal. Hoselu looked composed and Merino played an absolute blinder. His performance raises the question of do we play Shelvey on his return, or do we combine the pair of them. But one of the commentators on NBC raised a good point when he said that after such a good performance, The Fat Fireplace Polluter might think we are good enough and not sanction any more new signings. It must be said however that we beat a team that has shipped 10 goals in 3 matches and it will be interesting to see how we perform against Swansea. But there will be no momentum following our first victory as those blithering wuckfits who control such things have hoyed an international break at the start of the second month of the season! Why is such madness allowed to continue? Now there is the possibility of injuries and some of our new players will be denied an opportunity to gain more match fitness. ALL international games should be played in the close season and I would like to see clubs try to force this issue through as quickly as possible.

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

I said when the Dope got banned if Merino does the Biz Jonjo may be on the bench for a few games, having said that Shelvey could play further forward. he`s a class act when he want`s to be

  • ToonNL

some good individual performances Ritchie, Hayden and Merino standing out for me.

more team cohesion is needed against better sides though and we need to bring in someone who will take the burden off of Ritchie, lest he burns out.

  • Leazes Ender

Unfortunately this gives Charnley the breathing space to procrastinate…… with time running out…. how is Russian Roulette going to end up this time?

  • Cuh

Missed the game, but seemed like a good performance. This is what we need in my opinion. Benitez can inspire the current squad to perform at their best. Its much better than coming out sounding like Mourinho

  • Mirandinha9

Whilst 3 points is good at any time, it comes at the worst period possible, providing Cashley with all the evidence that he needs to justify why the existing squad is equipped enough to attain his ultimate ambition of finishing 17th in the Premiership. Correspondingly, it significantly reduces the strength of Rafa’s argument for the need for new recruits. I predict now that no one will now come in during the last few days of this transfer window. A high proportion of Toon fans who now think we’re a decent side after a 3-0 home win (including the Chronicle who referenced during today’s match that we were like Brazil!!!), will become sunk pretty soon when we get stuffed week after week when the decent teams come along. Cashley will certainly be laughing tonight as he will have sucked in many once again.

    • Wor Lass

I don`t think the results make a blind bit of difference. The budget has been set and everyone (on the top table) knows what it is and can work out what it can buy. Rafa`s “political” manoevres and public whinging have just been a futile attempt to get the fat lump to put a bit more in. The only good thing, at the moment, is that mitro hasn`t gone yet and some of the new signings look like they were worth the money.

      • TheNutJob

the budget is always set & the Pie man won`t move an inch

        • Wor Lass

          Exactly my point.

      • Mirandinha9

The results will overwhelmingly matter when in May 2018 the 3rd relegation in the last 10 years occurs

        • Wor Lass

If you don`t understand what I meant by that then you need your heaad checking out.

    • Danimal

Going to enjoy the evening (very much) but you’re probably right I’m afraid.

  • Grahame Johnson

The 5min spell before half time is usually quiet, today toon, united was sang none stop by the gallowgate, well done lads and lasses
