The Newcastle team v Tottenham has just been confirmed.

Great news to see that Dwight Gayle has been passed fit to play.

Hopefully his hamstring/confidence issues can be put to one side and missing the last two friendlies won’t hamper him today.

For the opposition, interesting to see a certain Moussa Sissoko included!

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Elliot, Manquillo, Lejeune, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Hayden, Atsu, Pérez, Gayle

and the Subs:

Darlow, Lascelles, Murphy, Aarons, Mbemba, Merino, Mitrovic

Apart from Gayle, the rest of the team is the one that started those final two friendlies against Wolfsburg and Hellas Verona.

Florian Lejeune keeping his place ahead of Jamaal Lascelles, after playin the most pre-season minutes of any NUFC player.

Elliot as expected is preferred to Darlow, whilst with Yedlin out injured it is Manquillo at right-back.

Hayden keeps his place alongside Shelvey though hopefully Merino will challenge for that position shortly.

Ayoze Perez predictably keeps his place, with no new signing and de Jong & Diame poor in pre-season.

All five new signings are included in the 18 man squad, with Murphy and Merino named on the bench.

Quite an attacking looking bench with Rafa naming Murphy, Aarons, Merino and Mitrovic named.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

They must have accepted Barcelona`s bid for SloMo

  • steve

Gayle and Perez didn’t work in the Championship, can’t see it being any different this season.

    • Clarko

It worked well enough to win the title.

      • steve

Diame started more games than Perez in the Championship, does that make him good enough?

        • Geordiegiants

You will have to wait five mins for a reply while he checks his stats.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            Clarko`s back

        • Clarko

I don’t know what you’re getting at? You stated “Gayle and Perez didn’t work in the Championship”, it did, Newcastle won the title, Gayle scoring 23 goals, a goal every 93 minutes and Perez making 16 goal contributions (goals and assists), one every 143 minutes.

          • steve

That tells me nothing about how many of those goals came with both on the pitch. Together they offer absolutely no physical presence, no outlet, no target in the middle (especially if we’re going to play two wingers) and they generally just don’t link up well together.

          • Clarko

That’s your job, to counter my argument, it’s not my job to find statistics for your argument. So far you have provided nothing in terms of evidence. You go on to make generic statements about “physical presence”, a “target” and an “outlet”, there is no substance there, no actual information.

          • steve

I’ve presented an argument as to why I don’t think they work as a pairing, you’ve given me some irrelevant stats about two individuals. But here’s a stat, one shot on target with both on the pitch today.

          • Clarko

            An argument with no evidence.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

I see Arsenal have priced Lucas Perez at £20m.
    Next

  • Peter Dobrianski

Stil think mitrovich can do a job with good ball whiped in of Ritchie

    • Cuh736

I agree. This is the pl. Just whip crosses and you can win games. Look at Burnley yesterday. I think thats why Rafa is in for another tall striker i.e. Joselu.

We may not be good enough to create spaces and give Gayle his customary tap ins

  • 1957

No full back on the bench (I don’t class Mbemba as one)…maybe a position that should finally be prioritised, I assume Gamez doesn’t have a future at the club.

On the bright side no SloMo

    • Clarko

      Potential options:
      RB: Yedlin, Manquillo, Gamez
      LB: Dummett, Manquillo, Gamez, Clark

      Unwanted: Haidara, Lazaar

      • 1957

If Gamez was an option for Benitez he surely would have made the bench today, Clark and Mbemba are primarily CB’s so we have 3 specialist fullbacks for 2 positions (as I sit here in level 7 that’s 1 available at present) that may be enough for you but to most it’s a recipe for relegation.

        • Clarko

There is an 18 man squad, not a 22 man squad, you cannot bring a replacement for every position. Again we have Yedlin, Manquillo, Dummett and Gamez as “specialist” fullbacks, in addition to Clark and Mbemba.

          • 1957

You can’t have cover for every position in a match day squad so you would expect to cover as many positions with specialist players as possible, did we need 2 CB on the bench? Unless Gamez is injured or perhaps not in the managers plans, I see no reason for him not to be there instead of Jamal or Chancel.

          • Clarko

I am arguing that Newcastle have sufficient numbers for that position, not about manager plans or selection decisions.

  • João Gabriel B S Santos

Do we have any problem to pass the ball???

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

the boys are playing well but on 30mins we`ve lost half our back 4,
    Dummy & LeJeune

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    The Pie Mans in house

  • João Gabriel B S Santos

A slide tackle from behind??? I think It should be a red card.

    • Kev-82

Don’t be daft, wasn’t that bad

  • Kev-82

Gayle doesn’t look fit to me, should have gone with Mitro today. Hopefully Dummett’s injury will finally force the hand to buy the left back we’ve needed for years.

    • Cuh736

Mitrovic should have started. Game would be a lot different, trust me

      • Paul Busby

Because he would have been the one with a red card?

        • Cuh

I just feel we would have a few more corner kicks, press higher with his hold up play.

Gayle will struggle in the pl. Saw it against hull last year in the EFL

  • MadMag83

If Spurs score our game plan goes out the window.

  • Geordiegiants

    Nooooooo!!!!!!!

  • Kev-82

When will Shelvey grow up, how many times is he going to keep doing this sh*t and let his team and the fans down

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

3 match ban, Jonjo`s an idiot

    • MadMag83

      He’s a liability

      • João Gabriel B S Santos

        Our captain..

        • Cuh736

          Vice. Lascelles is our captain

          • João Gabriel B S Santos

He was chosen our captain in our first PL match. I think that could be any other player… Clark, Ritchie, Elliot…

    • Kev-82

Time for him to go, we can’t afford to be playing with 10 men and missing players for 3 games.

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        Dropped us right in it

      • WrongToon

We can’t afford to let him go! Jonjo has talent, but his temperament is questionable. We simply do not have the quality in the team to let someone like that leave. Rafa clearly feels he can work with him, but the lad needs to start repaying that faith with calmness and composure.

        • Kev-82

Without a doubt he’s talented but he’s not much use to us playing with 10 men then picking up suspensions through sheer stupidity, if it was a one off fair enough but the guy doesn’t learn.

        • Andy Mac

You’d have to ask who would take him ?

    • Cuh736

Matt Ritchie opens his yellow card bank for the season. At least he doesn’t stack up reds.

We all complain about Mitrovic’s disciplinary record. I think we should start paying attention to Shelvey. I defend him a lot but come on, Silly reds every single time

  • Cuh736

Couple all this with Rafa Benitez thinking a week to the start of the season is the time to start complaining about uncertainty at the club. Absolute chaos

    • Danimal

Yes, clearly Rafa’s fault, nothing to do with your pal Mike thinking (yet again) that an entire transfer window is the time to withhold the cash and the day of the new season is the time to insult our intelligence with disingenuous comments on tv.

      • Cuh

My pal Mike? Go take out your frustration on someone else

I’m talking about the team and the people in it. The owners comments are less likely to affect players confidence than the manager’s.

  • Cuh736

    Game over

    • João Gabriel B S Santos

      Unfortunately :(

    • Paul Busby

Yep, here comes the cricket score.

    • Leazes Ender

      Game up for Ashley.

  • João Gabriel B S Santos

It’s funny that when the TV shows Mike Ashley, the TV commentator here in Brazil calls him a stingy.
    His fame os beyond borders!!!

    • Andy Mac

Yes it’s funny but bottom line is “Why own a football club if you cant afford to run it” ?

Is it just because of the free advertising or is it more to do with getting your own back ?

  • Cuh

On the bright side, Merino, Mbemba, Lascelles and Jamie sterry have a chance to show themselves now.

  • MadMag83

Fair play to the ten men, they’ve given it everything but it was a losing battle once Shelvey got himself sent off. Might have got a draw without the sending off.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Jonjo`s got a lot to answer for, MOM Atsu

    • 1957

      Right on both counts

    • Paul Busby

For us MOM yeah, actual MOM was their young lad fullback IMO.

    • Mark Davies

For once I agree with you

  • shellington

For the love of God Mike Ashely just go, I’d rather see Newcastle run by fans and local business men then give local kids a go at playing for their local club.

If that means they only get as high as league one or the championship I do not care at all. Top level football is insane, this is slow death with Ashely and those turning up to watch with him in charge are mugs.

    • Andy Mac

      Death by 38 games ?

  • Tino o

When will shelvey grow up? The answer is never this isn’t the first won’t be the last hopefully Rafa can find a solution within the squad as he will get no help from the pr!ck owner of our club. Long season ahead!

    • Mike

Rafa tell CAshley the f off

  • HenrySlade

Two players injured, one sent off and we’ve lost at home; but the spirit and organisation were good and it’s not all doom and gloom.

We’re back in the Prem…and we’re staying in the Prem.

    • GToon

      Well….until next May anyway.

    • Leazes Ender

      Nice flags.

      • Mark Davies

They are and build a nice atmosphere. Not that toubwould know on your settee

    • Mike

Eh how? Mediocre players no tactics 3 players down…did u see how we took corners spurs nearly scored from one …..

      • HenrySlade

The players aren’t ‘mediocre’ and there was nothing wrong with Rafa’s tactics. We were undone by a combination of circumstances
(2 x injuries + 1 x sending off) which destroyed our rhythm and our shape, but I saw enough to suggest that we’ll survive.

        • Andy Mac

I disagree Henry. Playing on the break at home with very little firepower is a plan designed to lose the crowd. We now have enough wide men to make 4-4-2 an option because without some creativity in MF that’s all we’ve got !

  • Tino o

Hopefully merino will hit the ground running and keep the baldy idiot out of the team

    • TheNutJob

      my thoughts exactly

    • Leazes Ender

The ‘baldy idiot’ is the only thing which makes the team tick and he cant do it if he’s not on the pitch.

      • Tino o

        So he’s not an idiot?

        • Leazes Ender

          Still an idiot

      • Cuh

He knows he’s our best option in his position, that’s why he misbehaves. Rafa should discipline him this time. No jumping straight back into the starting 11

      • mentalman

Merino was a lot better than shelvey defensively and with his passing shelvey may struggle to get back in the team

        • Leazes Ender

Thats because he’s a bloody defensive midfielder.

  • Toon Army AZ

Today’s outcome was truly unfortunate. With Shelvey’s inevitable suspension plus the injuries to the back line, getting points from the next 3 (very winnable) games vs. Huddersfield, West Ham, and Swansea will be that much more difficult.

On the plus side, Atsu was bright. He was still running hard even after going 1 and 2 goals down. Lejeune also looked good before going down to a cynical scissors tackle from behind by Kane. How did Kane avoid the red card?

    • Kev-82

If one of our players was sent off for that Kane tackle we’d be going mental, no more than yellow. If you think Kane should have went then by that logic so should Ritchie.

      • Toon Army AZ

It seems Sr. Benitez also had an issue with Kane’s tackle on Lejeune… “The Harry Kane tackle was worse than this one. It’s more dangerous. We lost one player from that,” Benitez told BBC Sport.

    • Mike

Sorry it was crap…tactics 1st half? Contain them? Spurs never got into 3rd gear they played us off the park possession football to players feet. We hummed the ball from the back ….Get out of our club

  • TheNutJob

Put in Micky Merino & let baldy rot on the bench until he sorts his head out, the guys a lunatic. we were already 2 defenders down but the lads were doing ok until that crackpot got sent off

    • TheNutJob

i see Fat Mike was there today, left a cheque for £60m dated 1 July 2018

  • Leazes Ender

Well thats Standen taken care of….. pity about the game.

    • Mark Davies

And where did you watch it if you even did settee ender

      • Leazes Ender

        Leazes End, I’m boycotting Sky.

        • Mark Davies

Course you did. So how do you call the people who really go happy clappers? Or have you changed to one of us and are filling ashleys pockets?

          • Jezza

Let’s get this straight. Going to home games does not make you a happy clapper. Nobody on this forum has ever implied that. Nobody. A happy clapper is an Ashley apologist. Someone who thinks selling Andy Carroll was a great bit of business. Someone who considers Kinnear. Pardew, Carver and McClaren to be an inspired series of managerial appointments. Someone who didn’t have any problem with St James’s Park being called the S***** D*****Arena. Someone who is genuinely impressed with NUFC’s summer transfer business. Someone who will go to great lengths to justify the fact that NUFC can longer compete in the transfer market with Watford, Brighton, Huddersfield or even second division Middlesborough. Someone who, despite 10 years of evidence to the contrary, will still insist that Ashley is doing his level best to provide a successful football team for Newcastle supporters. That is a happy clapper.

    • Mark Davies

I must say as well, thats standen taken care of, howay kidda you are seriously taking us getting beat as a one over a fellow fan? Ffs

  • Mike

    Total dross

  • Soldier

    Cashley`s a Spurs supporter

    • Leazes Ender

I think thats why he turned up today with his ex.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

I`m off to the chron, see what shyte for brains Ryder has to say on the game

    • Leazes Ender

      Five things we learned today?

      • Andy Mac

Struggling to find five tbh. The main one is more quality by end of August

      • GToon

I was gonna try and think up five things, try and be funny etc but to be honest I don’t think any of us have learned anything from today either results wise or performance wise. We could all see it coming a mile off. Shame isn’t it.

        • Leazes Ender

Learned it was as poor as I thought it would be, we are third bottom in the table and I think we are now going to stay there.

  • Andy Mac

Looks like we’re the next Yo Yo club ? Too good for the Champs but not good enough for the PL ? 27% possession at home will see the fans desert the sinking ship if Rafa’s not careful ? We have what we have so let’s play to their strengths. 1 up front isnt the answer.

PS FAO Mag people. Get searching the web for alternatives to Disqus or risk losing punters.

    • GToon

We are going to be that club Andy. He won’t fund us when we come back up because we’ve got the championship money in our first season back so we will go down and then when we go down we can’t use the EPL money because now we’re back in the championship so we have got to cut costs. It’s that basically repeated until he either leaves or has one pint too many.

    • Jezza

We’ll be lucky to become a yoyo club. I can’t see us getting back up straight away next time.

  • GToon

I think most of us would agree that the best we could have hoped for on our performance up until the sending off was a draw. Spurs were miles in front of us in nearly every department. I don’t think our players tactics of winding up Ali was a good idea. Lascelles had had a go in the first half and obviously Shelvey thought he’d give it a try too. And to think for a few dollars more Ali could have been playing for us – another master stroke from Ashley and Charnley. At least we have a manager who isn’t going to stand for any rubbish from fatty. I give him five more games.

    • mentalman

He wanted to stay in the south near his mam nothing to do with money

      • Andy Mac

If we’d offered what he wanted his Mum could have come with him ? Like Modric before him this club doesnt know a quality player when it sees one ! Yet we buy, and lose money, on the likes of Cabella, Thauvin and Riviere ?

        • Jezza

True. Alli had agreed to sign for Newcastle but the deal fell through when NUFC quibbled over 300 grand.
