The Newcastle team v Huddersfield has just been confirmed.

Mikel Merino makes his first start for Newcastle – in our poll this morning, 90% of fans voted form him to come in for Shelvey.

New signing Joselu is on the bench, with also a surprise inclusion of Saivet amongst the subs.

Mohamed Diame also returns from injury to take a place on the bench.

Rafa Bentez was forced into three changes to his team v Spurs, with predictably Lascelles and Mbemba keeping their places after replacing Dummett and Lejeune during that opening game of the season.

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Elliot, Manquillo, Lascelles, Mbemba, Clark, Ritchie, Merino, Hayden, Atsu, Pérez, Gayle

and the Subs:

Darlow, Saivet, Diame, Murphy, Aarons, Mitrovic, Joselu

  • X,WHY,Y MAN.

I thought he might have went for Diame with a safety first approach but fair play because it looks like he’s going to have a go at it from the start.
I just hope it doesn’t backfire with Merino not being able to get into the game then they are cattled basically !

  • foggy

no defenders on the bench. Hope we don’t get any injuries early on.
Would have preferred De Jong or Diame on instead of Perez who I think is like Bambi.

    • Salty

Aarons can play left back and Merino can play CB so there’s a bit of cover but it makes you wonder why he bought Hanley on a big contract. Agree on Perez, too lightweight and I would have gone with SDJ. 3 points today would do nicely.

      • TheNutJob

i would have gone with none of them & played Joselu behind Dwight

  • Jimblag23

Sky seem pretty keen for Huddersfield to win today by the look of their coverage so far 🙄

  • MadMag83

Allowing Huddersfield the lions share of possession, could end in tears this

  • TheNutJob

    Leazes mates there Frank Worthington

  • Jimblag23

What’s going on with Elliot’s distribution this season? Amateur stuff.

    • TheNutJob

Pepe will be here next week

      • Jimblag23

I hope so after seeing this, his kicking is a liability.
To be honest, I’d never noticed it in his game but these last two are embarrassing.

    • Cuh

Darlow should be ahead of him

  • João Gabriel B S Santos

    What a sad team…

    • Leazes Ender

      Si

  • 1957

Captain Calamity strikes again, standing a yard off the player he was marking in the box allowing him time to lay the ball off to Mooy to score.

    • João Gabriel B S Santos

      We can’t forget Merino…

      • Jimblag23

Merino wasn’t great but I thought he showed that with time he could be good.
The question is…do we have time?

  • Jimblag23

The worst thing about this game is Huddersfield look rubbish. They just want it more.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

    SloMos on

  • Jimblag23

100% as bad as anything from the relegation season. We were terrible!

    • Danimal

Which one, I’m losing count. So far our glorious leader has presided over 33% of this club’s relegations, could be 43% soon. Good going when he’s only had 8.7% of the club’s history to play with. Amazing what happens when you combine a rainy Sunday afternoon with a couple of pints and a calculator. I would vomit into the nearest fireplace but I don’t think the family would be too impressed.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

the teams just not good enough, it`s a simple as that

    • Danimal

Sadly the happy clappers have fully bought into Ashley’s defeatist twaddle about us not being able to compete with any other football club on the planet because our weather is a bit chilly and how unfair it is that every other club is strengthening. Last night in the boozer I had the pleasure of listening to three football fans (one was a Geordie) parroting bits of that Sky propaganda piece. I especially like the ones who come on here defending Ashley because he has had to balance the books due to two relegations, as if the relegations are an act of God or something.

  • Andrew Cowley

    Wow that was poor

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Sickening. For most of the team the will is there, just not the skill/athletic gifts.

    • Jimblag23

I don’t doubt their professionalism, but ‘uddersfield had more will and determination.
We lost so many 50/50’s. I don’t think the ref helped, especially in the first half he was a right homer. But no excuses for that.

  • Andrew Cowley

Very little credit to anyone there.prob mbemba best.very little else, very disheartening.crying out for Mitro when Diame came on

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

      lucky Mbemba wasn`t sold isn`t it ?

      • Andrew Cowley

Thought he looked good and at left back too.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

he can play all over the back 4

          • David Craig

He looked at class act, playing centre midfield, during the African Nations Cup, as well. Our best player, today and showed a great, positive attitude, last season, despite losing his place. Rafa didn’t rate him, after not following orders, against Wolves. Perhaps not th most intelligent squad member, but I think he’ll come good and hope we keep him. We need more like him. Oh! A striker, as well. Has anyone mentioned that we’ve needed a goalscorer for a while now?

      • DC1964

He was always good, I never understood why Rafa didn’t want to play him.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

I`ve always rated him, add to that he`s the youngest defender at the club

          • DC1964

I agree, I never doubted him, he was our best CH, probably still is.

  • Cuh

Cant believe we’re selling Colback and keeping Diame. That’s exactly how bad I think Diame is!

Need to drop Gayle too. Too Obvious

    • Jimblag23

      Yes. Joselu looked way better.
      Gayle is only a finisher.

      • Cuh

Enjoy your sarcasm, but I’m sorry. How many tap ins do you think we will create in this league? How many goalkeeper spills? We need someone who can bully the defence and let other players get involved!

        • Jimblag23

          I genuinely wasn’t being sarcastic.

          • Cuh

I’m sorry. I’m really frustrated today. Honestly expected three points. One would have been disappointing. But to lose, and especially when they weren’t spectacular? Come on!

  • Whickhamrobbie

WOW 15 point record is there for us to take i think .
Dire . and i include RAFA in that beaten easily by a poor team what would the score had been v citeh i shudder to contemplate .

  • Leazes Ender

I can’t believe this is a Benitez side.

    • Jimblag23

      I know. 😱

    • MichaelMaximusMoose

won`t be for much longer if Fatty doesn`t change his ways and Baroness Bradley banging on Rafa`s door

    • Soldier

      it`s an Ashley side

  • Paul Busby

No two ways about it, that was relegation standard football. Looked weak on every area of the pitch and zero synergy. Was like watching a Pardew or McClown team again.
Manquillo was hopeless, Perez completely lost and Gayle looking out of his depth.
Rafa needs to slap these fools in to shape, quickly.

    • Jimblag23

Nail hit on the head with every one of your points.

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Highlight of the game for Dad was seeing Frank Worthington in the stands
    😂😂

  • nufcslf

Got up at half 5 for that. Just what Cashley see’s in sticking with this mess he has created is anybody’s guess. Sadly not disappointed or surprised to the pathetic start to the season and the anticipated relegation battle ahead. ASHLEY OUT!!!!!

    • Cuh

Shut up with the Ashley whining today please. That team was not far from ours, we should have done better!

      • Jimblag23

Ashley should help out so we have better players. Pretty simple.

        • Cuh

You and nufcslf are both right, but don’t say it today like it was an excuse for the rubbish result! This team is on par with Huddersfield. They didn’t do enough!! The blame must go to the team for this!!!

          • Jimblag23

True. All round blame. But Ashley is also to blame for killing off our championship winning momentum. Replaced by the media hounding us waiting for Rafa to quit and us implode.

          • Cuh

They need to pull it together and sort out whatever it is! Perhaps Benitez seeming unhappy and requesting more players on every media outlet is affecting the confidence of the current crop. Would all have been avoided if they’d sorted things out privately! Frustrating

  • Bowlsey

We will go down unless Zero Hours Ashley actually puts his hand in his pocket and allows Rafa to spend. Today was atrocious and it showed just how little Rafa rates Mitrovic that he STILL can’t get a game even when Gayle is seriously lacking upfront! I rate Mitrovic but it’s obvious that Rafa won’t play him even when we’re up against it as we were today against a very average ‘Uddersfield. We’re in serious trouble yet again and it’s all self-inflicted yet again!

  • Cuh

If we want to get players is, we actually need to put in good performances as well. It’s one thing to blame the owner for not investing, but against a team like Huddersfield were today, we should have done better!!

    • Bowlsey

That’s why I’m scared for us! Losing to Tottenham last week could be expected, even taking Shelvey’s idiocy into account, but to look completely lacking in any sort of threat against bloody ‘Uddersfield is a serious cause for alarm. Mbemba and Ritchie aside we were poor all over the pitch.
