Confirmed Newcastle team v Hellas Verona: Gayle missing from squad as Mitro starts

The Newcastle team v Hellas Verona has been revealed for the finalfriendly of pre-season.

Only seven days before the Premier League kicks off, fans anticipating Rafa Benitez would play his first team…

This is who Rafa Benitez starts with:

Elliot, Manquillo, Lejeune, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, Hayden, Atsu, Pérez, Mitrović

and the Subs:

Darlow, Gámez, Lascelles, Mbemba, Aarons, De Jong, Diamé, Merino, Murphy

Dwight Gayle had sat out the full Wolfsburg match despite all but he and Jack Colback getting minutes on the pitch.

No mention afterwards for Gayle’s absence but a major shock to see him missing altogether today from the squad. Colback also missing.

No explanation yet to the contrary so safe to assume that both Gayle and Colback are injured and will be missing the start of the season.

The one person Newcastle couldn’t afford to lose…

Against Wolfsburg, Mitrovic played first half and then Rafa experimented with Diame as a one striker and then Perez doing the same.

Appears clear now that at that point (when playing Wolfsburg) Rafa was already having to look at other options with Gayle possibly set to be missing the start of the season.

***After the teams were announced, the Chronicle are now claiming that Gayle’s injury is a ‘minor niggle’. Let’s hope so. Even if he is being left out as a precaution against aggravating the ‘niggle’, difficult to see him starting against Spurs after not playing a minute of the final two friendlies (Wolfsburg and Hellas Verona) and only 30 minutes of the third last one against Mainz..

*****Now clarified as a ‘hamstring’ niggle, which considering his problems over the course of the last couple of years is a worry.
