Classic comments from Sunderland fans as Championship misery already sets in

Sunderland fans were loving it in August 2016 when Newcastle lost their first two Championship matches under Rafa Benitez.

A year later and reality is already staring the mackems in the face.

A League One standard manager, losing their only two decent players, a minimal budget, what could possibly go wrong…

After five matches they have won one and are a point above the relegation zone, 10 points below leaders Cardiff.

Hopes were momentarily raised when beating Norwich 3-1 in their second league match but the Canaries are one of the few teams below Sunderland and have conceded more goals (12) than anybody else in the second tier.

Sunderland have scored only two goals in their other four games and were smashed 3-0 by lowly Barnsley at the weekend.

No wonder there are so many rows of empty seats at the Stadium of Light.

Some very entertaining comments below, considering the way they went on when Newcastle were in the Championship and their grand claims before this season kicked off.

Sunderland fans commenting on their top message board Ready To Go (down again):

‘The team has no quality, no direction and absolutely no game plan whatsoever.

We have been playing a style of football for I don’t know how long which is embarrassing to watch. The club is steeped in failure and lauds average players like they are superstars.

Too much onus is put on graft over technique or ball retention, we can’t pass, are positionally inept, have no pace and players who are technically woeful.

People keep posting on here how Jones, Cattermole etc are good enough to walk this league but they’re not. Anyone watching Catts getting stripped for pace versus Leeds then trying in vain to chop the lad down shows how desperate he is.

We need good coaching, an identity which works, something we can take forward for the next two or tree seasons and build on.

What’s the worst that can happen ? Relegation is looming with this shambles we’ve got now anyway.’

‘Let’s face it given the budget he (Grayson) he has had we aren’t going to be challenging near the top end any time soon.

I agree it’s been a sobering wake up call re Cattermole, Jones etc. I thought they’d look a cut above in this league – they still look poor.’

‘If you accept the situation we are in you won’t get so stressed about it.’

‘Everything is bang on in his post. How people can’t see what is staring them right in the face is absolutely frightening.’

‘Grayson signs players he’s worked with who just aren’t good enough.

He is partly to blame plus he signed Vaughan which is unforgivable.’

‘When the owner wont let him spend a quid Grayson hasnt got a chance. Have a look upstairs for once and stop blaming the manager.’

Appointing Grayson was a missed opportunity to start again with a fresh approach based on coaching methods and modern scouting networks.

Instead we’ve got the League One plodder signing League One plodders and career-stalled journeymen he’s previously worked with.’

‘The writing has been on the wall for a few year now and it’s will get worse before it gets better.’

‘Exactly…which quality manager is going to work to that budget. We couldn’t attract the Aberdeen boss.’

‘Nothing I didn’t expect prior to the summer to be honest.’

‘The amount of players we need in is ridiculous and the worst thing is we will probably have a weaker squad after the deadline. We will finish below mid table imo.’

‘There is no point at all for people to be getting their hopes up thinking we are gunna bring in any decent players.

We will sell anyone if a decent offer comes in.’
