Vurnon Anita has signed for Leeds United.

The former Ajax player became a free agent at the weekend when his Newcastle deal ran out after five years at St James Park.

Able to play centre midfield and right-back, plus left-back, Vurnon Anita will once again be playing Championship football after Leeds announced his signing on Thursday afternoon.

Leeds United Official Statement:

‘Leeds swoop for former Magpie.

Leeds United are delighted to confirm that Dutch International ace Vurnon Anita has secured a three year contract with the Whites from Premier League side Newcastle United.

The defensive midfielder becomes the club’s sixth signing of the summer after securing deals with Felix Wiedwald, Mateusz Klich, Hadi Sacko, Pontus Jansson and Madger Gomes.

After spending seven seasons at Ajax he was snapped up by Newcastle in the summer of 2012 and the versatile 28-year-old made 27 Sky Bet Championship appearances last season helping the Magpies secure promotion back to the top flight.

Anita could feature for the Whites for the first time in Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Guiseley at Nethermoor Park.’

Good signing for Leeds, Big Vern will do a good job for them

    • Geordiegiants

It’s probably his level, but good luck to him.

      • Oooh bobbi fleckman

In the right set up, Vern is a great player and can play in the premier league. He needs to play in a footballing side that thrives on keeping the ball live, ironically, like a Gary Monk side

        • MadMag83

Monk is at the Boro now…..

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

That’s why it’s ironic, he’d have been more effective in a Monk team.

          • MadMag83

Leeds only seemed interested in stopping us playing at SJP last season. Can’t honestly say I saw much of them else.

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

I was at the away game, they were quite open in that.

  • Wor Lass

Good luck, Big Vurn. You always did your best and you never whinged.

    • superalansuddick

      Spot on,aiways gave 100%.

  • Geordiegiants

A good servant, never a one to make waves or spit his dummy out. I suppose if I we’re on his wages and deal, and was only as good as him, I would of kept my head down and ass up. IF YOUR READING BOBBI, A 28 YEAR OLD ON A THREE YEAR CONTRACT.

    • Delashio

Hahaha…”only as good as him.” He’s much better than you even in your dreams pal

      • Geordiegiants

Defo, but not even close to being a prem player.

    • Oooh bobbi fleckman

Which is probably on his terms.

Big Vern was a neat player, good passer of the ball and good luck to him at Leeds., I’d love them to go up, Vern could prove Rafa wrong and I’d have liked to see him with a new contract, I suspect that had we not have had so many players, Rafa would have liked to keep him.

  • Grahame Johnson

Glad he has signed for a decent club, its not a bad commute down to Leeds, he was no bother at the toon and is a mag for life after last season alone and the west ham relegation decider

  • glassjawsh-got-banned

Hope he comes up with them next season.

  • Albert Stubbins

good signing for Leeds- consistent performer at that level- will do well.

  • Steven05

I hope he can help Leeds grab one of the promotion spots

  • Stephen West

Shame as he didn’t do much wrong last season and better cover than Gamez.

  • Jezza

    Good move for all parties.

  • Mrkgw

Best of luck to him – I wouldnt have objected had he been given a new deal at Newcastle but things happen and people move on. Leeds gain on this one it would seem.

    • Lhc

Stick to the day job, your judgment on players leaves a lot to be desired. Ya nee jack hixon

  • Alreet

Good luck vurn. See you some sunny day lad.

  • Cuh736

    Best of luck!

  • Down Under Mag

Always gave 100% and was a much better player than some gave him credit for. Should do a good job for Leeds next season, good luck him!

  • nufcslf

Always an honest player. All the best to him and Leeds until we play them again

  • MadMag83

He’ll be a good signing for them. Best of luck!
