New away kit gets first airing as Newcastle’s young stars beat Darlington

It was Darlington 1 Newcastle 2 as United’s young stars got their pre-season off to a winning start.

Only 72 hours after the first team won 2-1 at Hearts, the second string did the same just down the road at Darlington.

The new 2017/18 away kit got an airing as Newcastle took an early lead through Sean Longstaff, the midfielder was on loan at Kilmarnock in the second half of last season and he converted Callum Smith’s pass which found him in the box.

On 11 minutes it was two to Newcastle as another player who impressed on loan last season (at Shrewsbury and Scunthorpe) applied the finishing touch, Ivan Toney with his first friendly goal of the pre-season.

Toney should have then made it 3-0 but his penalty midway through the first half was easily saved by the home keeper,

Shortly after Darlington pulled one back but Ivan Toney, once again, should have made it three just before half-time but struck the post.

Darlington had ‘goals’ disallowed towards the end of each half and the score ended 2-1 to Newcastle.

Recent signing, free agent Josef Yarney, kept the lead intact in the final stages, the former Everton defender clearing off the line.

Newcastle went with two completely different elevens in each half.
