News broke (see below) on Wednesday afternoon that Mikel Merino was allegedly on his way to Newcastle United.

Over in Spain, Marca reported that Borussia Dortmund had an ‘agreement in principle’ for the midfielder to join NUFC.

The 21 year Spaniard was said to be set to move on a year’s loan to Tyneside with Dortmund still seeing him a longer-term asset, although then some other media followed up with claims the move would be a permanent one.

The Bundesliga club then revealed that Mikel Merino hadn’t been included as the squad flew off to Dortmund.

Things however may have already gone a lot further than thought, with photos circulating on social media, said to show the player at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, presumably having/having had his medical.

The photos were taken by Newcastle fan Michael Gladders:

The Mag earlier today (26 July 2017):

An agreement in principle has reached for Mikel Merino to join Newcastle this summer, according to reports in Spain.

The Spanish Under 21 international moved to Borussia Dortmund shortly after his 20th birthday for around £3m.

The young midfielder had made his debut for Osasuna as an 18 year old back in 2014 and made 67 appearances for them in the Spanish second tier.

This included 36 league starts in 2015/16, which saw him score seven goals from midfield.

That form helped  clinch a move to German giants Borussia Dortmund but predictably he found first team football a bit harder to come by.

An unused substitute a few times in the Premier League last season, Mikel Merino only made two starts in the Bundesliga and six times came off the bench in league games.

Marca say that Borussia Dortmund have all but finalised a deal that will see him move to Newcastle this coming season.

However, the Spanish newspaper says that they still believe the now 21 year old midfielder has a big future ahead of him, so are only willing to let him move on loan for the season.

Borussia Dortmund once again qualified for Champions League football after finishing third in the Bundesliga and the German club see the priority for Mikel Merino as being to get experience and minutes on the pitch elsewhere at the moment.

If this transfer story does have substance then the Spanish angle for Rafa Benitez will be growing ever further, with the likes of Manquillo, Lejeune and Gamez having already being recruited from La Liga. Plus of course players such as Victor Fernandez below first team.

With Newcastle fans looking for some inspiration in the transfer market, loan deals have been suggested as being on the cards with the club struggling to buy the quality needed.

Borussia Dortmund have just confirmed via their Twitter account that Mikel Merino hasn’t travelled with the rest of the squad to Switzerland, as transfer discussions are taking place with another (unnamed) club.

On this skills/goals video footage below, he looks a very tricky left-footed midfielder (who can also play as a left sided full-back/wing-back or centre-back), loves his nutmegs and tricks as well as doing the more defensive work, but who also goes down pretty easy…

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

Is he better than SloMo, if he is i welcome the boy with open arms

    • Albert Stubbins

to continue a reoccurring theme in this article- HERE HERE!!

  • anyobrien

    under the radar signing…lovely
now for a forward to silence the mag moaners.

    • Soldier

they are all under the radar signings we make, in other words nobody else wants them

      • Andy Mac

Agreed. All this media hype about NUFC involved in transfer battles with numerous other clubs is just clickbait. Has any one of these five signings been linked with another club during the summer ?

    • Leazes Ender

He has no first team experience you knacker, look up the players before you go skipping into the sunset…..

      • TheFatController

When friends reunited came along, were you on there as much as you are on here ?

        • Albert Stubbins

he gets on my nerves too but to be fair that was one of his more succinct comments.

        • Leazes Ender

          You get on my nerves

          • TheFatController

Has ‘friends’ touched a nerve ? As in, got none?

      • anyobrien

        Knacker….. Steady on sunshine

  • TheFatController

I’ll bet being a Dortmund player and having had a season in La Liga, and played for Spain U21, we’ll be hearing its another low key signing and clearly means for the rest of the window we won’t be signing anyone we’ve all heard of….

Either that or we’ve signed a young Spanish player from one of the World’s best club set-ups having played in one of the world’s best leagues and for one of the world’s top footballing nations’ U21s. And that his signing has no bearing on what we can predict will be any further activity.

    • Leazes Ender

He’s had 292 minutes of first team football in the bundesliga.

      • glassjawsh-got-banned

So had Christian Pulisic until this year. That stat means nothing.

        • Soldier

after 7 games in the whole of last season can he hit the ground running in the premiership. the answer to that is no.
we need quality players in to even survive in this league

          • Mike

here here…is there a REAL signing coming up or are Cashley & co doing the normal and getting cheapo lets hope for the best in the Prem. and see if we stay up…never learn

          • I doubt you were in Dortmund to watch him train. Look, the kid clearly had potential otherwise Dortmund wouldn’t have signed him. He has represented Spain in U19 and U21 levels. We are getting him on loan, and he’s definitely eager to prove he can play. He might not be the best option if you are a top 3 Team in Germany, but surely better than Colback and Saivet.

          • Scooter

apparently that’s all he did do train, if he was any good they wouldn’t sell him, would they

          • TheFatController

            Clearly, he’s rubbish. It’s final.

          • Albert Stubbins

Colback and Saivet- surely those two would be better served by becoming solicitors- it could well be the only worthwhile partnership they will ever form.

      • TheFatController

and that’s the World football indicator of a bad signing. It’s a sad day for the club.

        • Leazes Ender

          Thats minutes not games

  • Leazes Ender

Just had a look on Transfermarkt to see who the hell he is…… he’s another low cost squad player…….

Didn’t Sunderland stock up like this only to find that you can only play eleven of them at one time, and were duly relegated.

He’s actually taken the average value of squad players down.

When does the Rafalution start…… I’ve seen the Lafalution, its dull dull dull….. oh my god its dull.

    • TheFatController

You had me at hello – sorry, wrong film.

      You had me at Transfermarkt

    • Oooh bobbi fleckman

      You really are pathetic

      • Leazes Ender

and you are Funlovingexpress and half a dozen others.

        Look him up.

        • Oooh bobbi fleckman

I’m anything you want me to be but tell me, why is it you know better than Benitez on who we should buy? You seem to blab on about some obscure transfermarket website as if it’s the bible. These things are written up by kids with too much spare time.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

            Yo Blobby,
            you on day release then
            😂😂😂😂

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

Ahhh Micky love, you are a wit.

          • Leazes Ender

Its not obscure to journalists, I thought everyone was aware of it because if you google a player usually the first thing to come up is his Wiki page and shortly afterwards his transfermarkt page.

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

Very lazy journalists, it’s just a bunch of kids with time on their hands.

          • Leazes Ender

            Throw away statement.

          • anyobrien

Correct he’s a wind bag who probably doesn’t even go to the match.

          • Leazes Ender

            Correct

          • Leazes Ender

            You’re a windbag.

    • SH.ER

Let us all start a campaign to send this lunatic to the closest asylum

      • TheFatController

Maybe he already is? Man is a social animal, meaning he interacts in not only words, but the body language of reactions that aren’t communicated verbally, but communicate so much more.

Maybe he enjoys social media because it’s just words and he doesn’t have to suffer to looks of derision/ guffaws he was getting in the real world ….

        • SH.ER

He moans like a fat kid crying for chocolate
          He needs help man haha

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

he posts facts, Do you find any factual errors in his posts.
he may be cynical but we can`t all be happy clappers

          • SH.ER

Yeah sh*t a$$ “facts” from Transfermarket
Are you his brother or something?

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

dont` think so, i`m nowhere near his intellectual level & neither are you

          • Leazes Ender

            ….here, here…. oh sorry….

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

ha ha, just in case we need reminding that MMM was set up by Leazes to try and make Leazes appear a little less ridiculous.

          • Oooh bobbi fleckman

MMM, you fall short of a gnat’s intellectual level, it’s feint praise for Leazes, rather insulting for SH.ER

          • TheFatController

I think many don’t mind facts, pessimism, anger at Ashley etc, it’s all opinion.

its just a bizarre mental state to be in to think positive people aren’t as intelligent as you, and need educating by vastly superior brains.

Every time we make a signing, all we hear is ‘don’t you get the reality?’ Like we don’t comprehend ‘ Newcastle have signed a young Spanish U21 Dortmund squad player ‘

Yeah, I can’t get my head round those facts. Enlighten me on its negative so my retarded brain understands it like you do….

          • Leazes Ender

If you need positives in you life you’re either suffering from something incurable or you’re an electrician…..

All I’m doing is countering the spin and blowing away the smoke mate.

I’m being attacked for using transfermarkt to get facts but what do you think Journalists use? Soccerbase I’m told by a journalist thats what the chronicle boys use.

          • TheFatController

It’s not a question of needing positives

If somone believes something with prejudice, you’ll look for evidence to back up your belief whilst ignoring any other evidence

Fine to counter the positive facts – in my view a Spanish U21 who Dortmund bought and used is positive – with negatives. Yes, we’d be better off with a 26 year old PL first team player, but isn’t tat what Shelvey and Ritchie are?

As examples – This time last year the negatives were Hayden wasn’t a regular for Hull, and there was nothing but negatives around Clark. We should have listened to that negativity clearly ..

          • Scooter

he was a regular for Hull & they wanted to sign him from Arsenal but he came here & for me he`s a good buy

          • Leazes Ender

Lets go through what I said one bit a time then….

First: This player has little experience of first team football….true or lie?

          • TheFatController

He’s positive signing, experience has nothing to do with positivity, they can be mutually exclusive and are with this signing.

          • Leazes Ender

            Incorrect answer….no points.

          • TheFatController

You’re so superior in tone – it’s like you’re insecure so attack people as inferior to make all the bad stuff go away.

That, my friend, is a psychological fact: the state of pathological persecuting superior types.

You’re bringing all the books I read to life – you’re the gift that keeps on giving

          • Leazes Ender

No you are wrong. I’m just taking the p$ss out of you because you can’t be ar$ed to look up the facts for yourself, and instead choose to have a go at me….are you telling me you have read complicated books on pychology but can’t be bothered to check out the details of an article….. it easy… transfermarkt…. all there …..or mostly all there on a plate.

          • TheFatController

It’s fine to use facts, that’s very scientific

The problem arises when you become excessively negative and use facts to back up a negative viewpoint, avoiding positive facts so you can be right in relation to your view.

So rather than being open to the positives and the negatives, you just go and find the negatives

So, every time you quote the facts from transfermarkt, I concluded ‘potential’ doesn’t go into its algorithm or scoring. Because you’ve told us it has England and Spanish U21s as being valued at peanuts

So you’re saying your facts prove they’re worthless, yet borussia dortmund and Rafa ignore those facts and pay more than transfermarkt tell them to.

I personally think potential must be a ‘fact’ when considering a player, so I don’t base my opinion on transfermarkt valuations because I believe ‘potential’ has a monetary value in modern football.

          • Leazes Ender

I’m reporting you to Dave Gorman.

          • TheFatController

Leazes, I qualified so did plenty of research.

I wouldn’t have qualified by just saying ‘ I read one website and that is everything I need to know’ because they don’t give out qualifications based on someone deluded enough to think one website is all the facts you need.

Yet you do. You mock people because they haven’t researched transfermarkt. ‘It’s all there’ you say?

If football is a religion, you’re telling me transfermarkt is the Bible? Haha, ‘ it’s all their in the good book (aka website)’ ‘ praise be to transfermarkt’

We signed a squad player from
Dortmund and you prove to us that transfermarkt see him as, er, hmm, oh yes, that’s it, they see him, bizarrely, as a squad player from Dortmund…

Like the wizard of oz. we pull back the curtain on your amazing transfer market knowledge to see a farty old man blinding the people with a few facts from a website that you believe will replace modern day coaching set ups.

A modern day wizard of oz. keep up the good work, it’s entertaining me no end…

          • Leazes Ender

Do you believe Journalists have inside info on obscure German reserves, of course not. You aren’t just attacking me but every Sports journalist.

You qualified as what? It certainly wasn’t from any academic institution because your dislike of investigation is manifest.

          • TheFatController

Your ‘investigation’ is one website – no stone left unturned in your investigative process eh?

You then proclaim that ‘you have all the facts’ as a result

I don’t even have a problem with that

My problem with you is that if transfermarkt said someone we signed was worth more than we pay, you’d not use that because you’re obsessed with bashing Ashley.

Your brain only works in the negative – you’ve labeled Ashley as your nemesis, and see anyone not sharing your view as disloyal to your cause

We all hate Ashley, we’re just not all as pathological about it as you convey yourself to be on here. You’re renowned on here for twisting things, using your ‘facts’ sparingly, being intensely negative. You see that as others being inferior and less intelligent than you.

If you do something often you get good at it. You’ve got so good at hating Ashley on here you’re getting better at it daily. you are completely biased against everything at the club, yet claim you are simply using facts. You’re not. You’re selecting facts to fit your views…

          • TheFatController

oh, you’re taking the p out of me? Ah, that’s made me feel shame and no mistake. A lifetime of good experiences crushed by an intensively negative guy taking the p out of me online – all is lost for me. Your sense of your own superiority is misplaced on this occasion, but nice try.

          • Leazes Ender

            All is lost on you.

          • Leazes Ender

            Here here…

          • anyobrien

            We’re do you sit max

          • Mal

Sorry but values on transfer market are not facts. A pity really as I would love it if we were going to get over £4 million for Saivet.

  • Munich Mag

Yeah, being reported on German teletext. Not getting into a pretty strong BVB midfield is not such a bad thing. Haven’t seen nor heard much of him, thiugh sure he’ll be comfortable on the ball.

  • Mxpx

Forgive my optimism but I think this is a solid signing for the first team

    • Leazes Ender

You have just looked him up haven’t you?

      I recognise irony.

      • Mxpx

guilty as charged but i was mainly basing this on him having been considered good enough for Dortmund to snap him up in first place rather than you tube which seems to suggest he gets tackles in pings a decent pass competent with his head and goes to ground too easil i understand you can edit a video in a way that most players could look good but with his limited time in a dortmund shirt there can’t be too much footage to go with i’m pretty confident hes an upgrade on mo diame and jack colback regardless

        • Leazes Ender

He’s only scored five goal in the second division in Spain, he’s not a bloody striker he’s DM and secondly CM. that video is of strikers getting past him with ease.

Why do you think he’s wearing a W****a shirt?

  • Mike

how many games has he played? oh dear fit straight in then?

    • Andy Mac

Aye two seasons in La Liga 2 and 9 games at Dortmund and he’s now the answer to our prayers ?? FFS this is yet more squad bulking up but why do we need to bulk up when we’ve got bulk already that wont shift ?

  • Lhc

Another stab in the dark signing, club is a joke top to bottom cheap option yet again

    • We are looking to offload 10 first team players, we have to sign squad members better than what we have and apparently he(Merino) is. We will make 1-2 good signings, but just waiting not to be robbed with silly money for players like 40-50m which is absurd. Ashley knows that if he doesn’t have proper players he will get relegated again and lose a lot of money.

      • Scooter

Ashley knows nothing about football, how do you think the club is in such a state

      • Lhc

We won’t offload the full 10 and we won’t sign anyone head turning aswell I would put my life savings on that

      • Andy Mac

“Ashley knows that if he doesn’t have proper players he will get relegated again and lose a lot of money”

You know I’m not really convinced about that ? Fatman will always gamble on our squad being better than three other clubs come May 2018. He’s done it a few time but caught out twice !

        • It was not the squad that got us relegated last time it was the poor managers. Teams that survived like Sunderland had much worse squad that we did, but had a decent manager.
Fatman got us relegated because he appointed McClown and if he kicked him out in January and brought Rafa then, we never have been relegated in the first place. If you remember in the end it was a matter of 4 points, which I’m sure Rafa would have picked up if he had those extra 6-7 games.

          • Andy Mac

So you dont think Fatman is gambling with the squad ?

  • Looks like a strong lad, definitely a good bargain and better than Colback/Saivet

    • Scooter

      who isn`t

  • Scooter

Is Carr still on the board & if so why. the signings in this window seem strange to say the least

  • Thefootballerwhocouldfly

So underwhelmed by transfers. However, look at the positives It’s a signing! One for the future?!

    • anyobrien

Yeah we’res all the 50 million men

  • Damon Horner

Think I’ll judge how good he is on how well he plays. Don’t see him immediately breaking into the team. If he is comfortable on the ball could he be the backup to Shelvey the fans want?

    • Leazes Ender

Do you go to reserve matches?

      • Damon Horner

        Is that an offer?

        • Leazes Ender

No, thats where he’ll be playing…. I thought you were going to judge him.

          • Damon Horner

If he plays reserve games only it’s an obvious telling sign how good he seems. Just like Lazaar.

          • MichaelMaximusMoose

never take a knife to a gunfight
            😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

          • Damon Horner

Not sure what you’re on about. How can your hero only speak in fact when the lad hasn’t even signed yet he has only played in reserve games? You both make it up as you go along.

          • Leazes Ender

oh god haha…. all of funlovings incarnations are the same character and he doesn’t realise it…… it keeps him off the streets.

  • Jimblag23

If we make, say 2 proven decent signings this summer, then our signings so far are good squad strengthening. If these ARE the signings then we’re truly in for a tough ride this year, starting with a spanking from Spurs.

    • anyobrien

      You’ll not be going then

  • Stephen Paylor

Another cheap but promising player who ‘could’ be a real bargain for us. However, we are going to quite a few of these types to go well for us this year. It can happen and if Rafa gets this right it will really set us up well for the future after spending limited money. Fingers crossed

    • Leazes Ender

I think he’s a ‘loan’ signing as nobody has mentioned a fee…. look it up.

      • Clarko

Loan with an obligation to buy via Chronicle, Daily Mail and Telegraph. Reported €7million fee.

        • MichaelMaximusMoose

          Telegraph reporting £3m

        • Leazes Ender

          So its a purchase then.

          • Clarko

It’s a loan with an obligation to buy via the sources mentioned earlier.

          • Leazes Ender

Douglas at the Chronicle says that ‘option to buy’ means ‘bought’….. its a wording to get around fair play rules.

          • Clarko

To quote Mark Douglas, ” Loan with an obligation to buy was the deal with Cabella/Thauvin. It’s effectively a permanent deal. Structured that way, I guess, to fit in #nufc budgetary constraints. Pay X amount now, X amount later. #nufc”

Loan with an obligation to buy.

          • Leazes Ender

            Bought

          • Clarko

“Loan with an obligation to buy”

You didn’t know what type of deal it was, incorrectly stated the deal as a “loan”, I corrected you, with sources, you continued to misrepresent the deal calling it a “purchase”, I corrected you, you then misquoted the journalist Mark Douglas, I corrected you again and you still insist on getting it wrong, for what reason? Fun, to try and create this illusion that you were right all along, to be irritating or are you just really, really dim? Never mind, what was I thinking, asking you to answer a question… Have fun.

          • Leazes Ender

You haven’t understood what he was saying, read it again…. its a purchase to get around fair play rule.

          • Clarko

What do you think a “loan with an obligation” to buy is? I guess you did answer my question.

          • Leazes Ender

I ‘m not saying its a purchase, the chronicle editor defined it as such, I believe him, its to have someone on your payroll if your squad is too big.

You really are a daft senile old git arent you Ed?

          • Clarko

And you’re a liar, you have stated it’s a “purchase”. It’s not my fault that you don’t know what a loan with an obligation to buy is. You’re a complete moron. I’m done, have fun being stupid for the rest of your life.

          • Alex

You did say purchase and you did say bought, Leazes. I think those worfs are pretty clear in their meanings.

To try and pull you two dogs apart, though, the test for most people would be WHEN Newcastle get the players registration in their name. Until that time, it’s not a purchase, and if he’s in our squad, it’ll be a loan.

            Goodnight sweeties.

          • Clarko

“A loan with an obligation to buy”

          • Leazes Ender

            We’ve bought him,

          • Clarko

            Borussia Dortmund Official Statement:

“Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino, 21, is set to complete a loan switch to newly-promoted Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

A binding purchase option was agreed with the English club for the event that the player features in a certain number of competitive matches.”

A loan with an obligation to buy after a certain number of competitive matches you idiot.

          • Leazes Ender

At the point of my second reply Douglas had defined the phrase ‘loan with an obligation to buy’ almost as if he was reading this very argument…. it means ‘bought’

            Bloody well read it Alex

  • Alreet

    Who

Just read the BVB Fanblog page, they seem to be disappointed that he is leaving, was due to leave for 10 mill last week to Athletico Bilbao but the deal was pulled. Could be a good one for the future, give him 6 months to fit in, we’ll need time to bed everyone in. It aint gonna be Samba football but hopefully we’ll have enough to hold our own. The transfer window isn’t closed yet either…fingers crossed..

What do you think about transfermarkt’s benutzerfreundlich format?

  • Munich Mag

:-) I don’t know what transfermarkt is mate :-) ….just that it is “user friendly” – benutzerfreundlich …

It was founded in 2000 by a guy with a beard from Hamburg (that’s in Germany I looked it up on Google maps…. the beard isn’t important)

It allows idiots like me to find out stuff about players history….. some folk think its ‘just made up stuff” unlike the chronicle who had us linked with over 100 player s by June…. funny thing is some of their journalists use it to write articles but omit many important facts such as experience, telling the reader that squad players are a ‘fantastic swoop by Rafa’ and ‘five things you need to know about ‘insert name here’.

I can’t understand why clubs appoint people like Rafa, Klopp, Ferguson José etc. It’s a waste of money. Would it not be better to ask someone to sit in their bedroom on a Saturday afternoon and check the facts of football on some German website or even Wikipedia? I’m not as intelligent as some so it therefore baffles me.

Ask Dr Ed Harrison he’s a guy who knows good sense!

      • Steven05

I’ll take your word for it. He seems like he should be paid the highest wage in World football.

I’ll tell you something about Dr, Ed…… he misses keys on the keyboard with his left hand….. and so does funloving and fleckman.
