Maz Sels lifts Super Cup with Anderlecht – Video

Matz Sels didn’t get off to the best of starts with new club Anderlecht in their first friendly.

Against Red Bull Salzburg two weeks ago, the Newcastle keeper conceded within seconds of kick-off as he totally missed the ball, the game ending in a 4-1 defeat for the Belgian team.

Thirteen days later, Matz Sels played his first competitive match on Saturday, the Belgian Super Cup.

The equivalent of the English Charity/Community Shield, league winners Anderlecht were up against cup winners Zulte Waregem.

After only 135 seconds Sels conceded, though as you can watch below he couldn’t really do much with this one.

Straight after the break though, the opposition keeper was punished when he kept the ball in play as he slid out of the box. Whereas Karl Darlow got away with this last season in a Championship game, the Zulte Waregem keeper saw the Anderlecht striker pinch the ball and score.

With Anderlecht going on to score the winner in the 59th minute and ensure that Matz Sels picked up the first silverware of his one year loan deal.

The Newcastle goalkeeper became the best paid player in the history of the Belgian league when agreeing to sign for the champions.

Still a regular in the national squad despite being dropped by Rafa from first the team and then the matchday squad once Rob Elliot was fit, obviously Anderlecht haven’t brought him in to be anything other than number one this season.

The Belgian league season kicks off in only 5 days time on Friday 28 July,  when Anderlecht visit Antwerp.

Back on Tyneside the goalkeeping picture is no clearer, with 20 year old Freddie Woodman set to follow Sels out on loan, whilst Tim Krul and Karl Darlow are up for sale.

Rafa Benitez has confirmed he wants to bring in a new goalkeeper, almost certainly to be number one, with Rob Elliot providing back-up/competition.
