Mainz boss speaks after beating Newcastle United

After a final score of Mainz 2 Newcastle 1, Sandro Schwarz was celebrating his first victory as manager of the Bundesliga side.

Mainz parted company with Martin Schmidt after only staying up on the final day of last season, with Schwarz promoted from managing the reserve side.

When his team played at a quick pace with movement the Mainz manager thought they were ‘always able to create danger’.

Whilst after the final whistle he declared ‘We have conquered an opponent from the Premier League and showed a lot of good moves’.

The match report on the official Mainz club website claimed that it was a ‘convincing 90 minutes’ and that the home side had pretty much controlled the match.

Difficult to disagree with that as Newcastle struggled to create and were cut open far too easily at times, with Rafa Benitez having admitted that they will need to defend better when the Premier League kicks off.

Mainz 2 Newcastle 1 report from the German club’s official site:

‘FSV Mainz 05 met Premier League Newcastle United FC on Saturday afternoon and won, after a convincing 90 minutes.

The premiere for Sandro Schwarz in the OPEL ARENA was thus extremely successful: after the early lead by Levin Öztunali in the fifth minute, the Red-Whites delivered a strong performance.

After the equalizer by Jesus Gamez (65 minutes) in the second half came the 05er back and scored in the 84th minute by Viktor Fischer.

From the first minute on, the 05ers played confidently and ran at the opposing team.

However, the 05ers did not want to be satisfied with the early lead. Sandro Schwarz took the hand in hand and played mainly in the opponent’s half. When the English club was able to penetrate into the Mainz half, the defence was compact and earned applause from the crowd for their good performance.

In the first dangerous move of the visitors from Newcastle in front of René Adler’s box, he proved his reaction strength and excelled saving the shot from Siem De Jong excellently from a short distance.

In the 61st minute, both sides were almost completely replaced and the freshness of the opponent immediately fed into the result: the equaliser scored by substitute Jesus Gamez (65th minute.).

The 05ers did not want to settle for the draw and Viktor Fischer broke with a shot at Freddie Woodman (72 ‘) and Suat Serdar’s shot landed over the crossbar (82’). Fischer’s goal in the Mainz soccer match brought a 2-1 win.

Coach Sandro Schwarz was very satisfied with the performance of his team:

“The two goals were great.

“When we played with tempo and played quickly behind the lines, we were always able to create danger.

“We have not yet managed to implement our principles over 90 minutes, which is normal at this time of preparation.

“But now we have conquered an opponent from the Premier League and showed a lot of good moves.”
