Former Newcastle midfielder Lee Bowyer gets first management role
One-time Newcastle player Lee Bowyer has now been appointed to his first role in management.
Starting off as a player at Charlton Athletic, the 40 year old has now been confirmed as the club’s Assistant Manager.
Lee Bowyer had been working on a temporary basis since January as part of Manager Karl Robinson’s backroom staff.
However, with departures at the club this summer, the former England midfielder has landed the full-time job as assistant to Robinson.
Obviously, Newcastle fans will most remember Lee Bowyer for that mad/bizarre on-pitch fight with Kieron Dyer, the pair managing to help wreck an end of season that at that point still held much promise in both the FA and UEFA Cups.
Interesting to see if he displays as much control on the touchline as he did in his playing career and off the pitch private life…
Lee Bowyer describing the appointment as ‘a bit of a fairytale’.
Charlton finished in 13th place last season in League One, 13 points off the play-off spots.
“It feels great to be asked to do this and to work alongside Karl and I’m really looking forward to it.
“It was an easy decision to make.
“We worked closely towards the end of last season so I know the ins and the outs and it’s felt a bit like a homecoming because there are a few faces who are still here from when I was a kid.
“I have a lot more experience now that I can pass on to the lads.
“I’ve worked under a lot of good people in my career and Charlton is where it all started, so it’s a bit of a fairytale for me.”
