Dwight Gayle was back at the training ground on Monday morning and is looking forward to the challenge ahead.

With 23 goals last season despite on starting 26 Championship matches, Newcastle’s number nine says ‘I just want to get my fitness back and stay fit…I want to perform as well as I did last season’.

The striker has along with the rest of the players been following throughout his break, programmes put together by the physios and personal trainers.

Dwight Gayle says that ‘last season was all about getting back to the Premier League’ and that ‘hard work’ was the key to success in the Championship.

Kicking off against Premier League runners-u Tottenham, Newcastle’s top goalscorer last season says ‘I’m sure we will be ready’.

Dwight Gayle speaking to NUFC TV:

“It has been a long break for a lot of the boys and excited to be back.

“I just want to get my fitness back and stay fit – sure the rest of the boys feel the same.

“Get the minutes in (on the pitch) and prove to the manager we should be in his thoughts when the season starts.

“Last season was hectic and there were loads of games, so the break was needed and it was good to get a rest in. Now though we are firing and ready to go.

“We have got programmes from the physios and personal trainers, so everybody has been doing their own little thing over the summer to keep on top of it – so when we come back we are not miles behind it.

“Last season was all about getting back to the Premier League and now we are here it is exciting. It just shows what hard work can do if you put it in.”

‘Are you feeling that personally – proving yourself in the Premier League?’

“Yes, of course everyone has their own personal reasons but me personally, I want to perform as well as I did last season. I’m looking forward to it.

“Everyone has a smile on their face and talking about their breaks, as well as what we have to look forward to this season.

Tottenham is a big one to start and I’m sure we will be ready but they are a great team and we are looking forward to all the tasks we have this season.”
