Wednesday morning have seen claims that Aleksandar Mitrovic has been offered to Lyon.

Foot Mercato report that their information is that Newcastle have given the Ligue 1 club a £16m valuation on the Serbian striker.

Lyon have lost a host of players, with Mathieu Valbuena, Corentin Tolisso, Maxime Gonalons, Alexandre Lacazette and Christophe Jallet all leaving and the club banking around £90m.

Lacazette of course has left a big hole in the French club’s forward line after joining Arsenal and with £8m Bertrand Traore their biggest incoming transfer so far this summer, Lyon clearly have more than enough money to finance such a deal for Mitrovic.

Whether he fits their needs/wants is another question, with Lacazette scoring over 90 goals for Lyon in the past three years, they are desperate for quality to replace him.

Mitrovic made only 11 Championship starts for Newcastle last season, scoring four goals, but for his country he continues to be first choice and over the last year has averaged a goal a game at international level.

It appears clear that Rafa Benitez doesn’t see a future for the Serbian striker at Newcastle and for the first time last month, Newcastle’s number 45 admitted that he may well leave this summer, if the right offer for both player and NUFC comes in.

Rafa Benitez will be desperate to add at least one more striker to his squad and moving out Mitrovic could be a big help in making that happen.

12 June 2017 – Aleksandar Mitrovic:

“I’m very happy to help Newcastle back to the Premier League because that’s where the club deserves to be.

“I heard something about other clubs but for now I just want to rest. I need to prepare for next season.

“If some good offers for me – which are also good for the club – come in for me over the summer, then we will speak about it.

“If it doesn’t happen then I’m still a Newcastle United player, I have three years on my contract.

“So we have to speak to the club, to the manager and we will see.

“I’m happy there.

“We have a good team there and we are back in the Premier League but we have to see.”

    Good price,get him sold.

  • Soldier

£16m in to be replaced by Rolan £5m ?

    • HarryHype59

So who gets the other 11m?

  • East Durham Mag

Is he worth 16 million? If NUFC get it we are laughing.

  • Anita kick up the Hoop

Short sighted .. he’s 22 and has bags of potential.. players progress in curves, I’m convinced he’s capable of being a real player Especially if he was given a partner

    • Mike Adam

I totally agree with what you said! He has excelled everywhere else he has played, maybe Rafa needs to set up the team to play to Mitro’s strengths! Averages a goal a game at International level. Look at Mourinho letting Lukaku go to Everton! Now he buys him back for 75m. Not saying Mitro will be a Lukaku but letting him go could be a mistake!

      • Anita kick up the Hoop

True, Zlatan struggled at Ajax and was close to being written off until he matured .. the rest is history .. again I’m not saying Mitro is another Zlatan but there is potential in him .. 22 is still young fir a centre forward

  • TheNutJob

he’s obviously surplus to requirements so get what we can for him, but will the £16m buy a replacement or will we go cheep

    • HarryHype59

Cheap seems to be in vogue at SJP these days.

  • goggsy

Lyon would baulk at paying 16mill for a centre forward even without seeing his stats, with a proud history of specifically not signing them and his stats into the bargain, this isn’t going to happen,I’d be amazed.

  • Paul Patterson

    £16m+ and it’s a good deal, but only if it’s re-invested . .

    • Leazes Ender

He must have someone lined up.

      • TheNutJob

        Karim Benzema ? 😂😂

        • Cuh736

Don’t be silly mate. it’s Alexis Sanchez

  • Rich Lawson

He’s a likeable bloke for his passion but we don’t play like the Ukraine so he isn’t going to get a run of games how ever long he stays, even if he played in the prem’ for us the more experienced defenders would just wind him up for a card and get him sent off for retaliation later, lets just wish him well and hope there really is an incoming £16mil to put toward getting a proven prem’ goalscorer.

  • TwinFire

results count and he misses too many golden chances to score. Watched every game he was in for the last two seasons and he just doesn’t hit the target enough – but he does a good job on the pitch before that. Then take Gayle who seems to slot it past the keeper for fun at times.

  • Wor Lass

I like Mitro and think he could develop into a good PL striker but, maybe, not with us. 16mil is a good price but only if it’s used to buy someone better – like Remy, for example.

    • Rich Lawson

Remy would be good if he is injury free again,Chelsea would probably do business at £10 mil to get him off the books ?

      • Wor Monga

£10m would be excellent business for Remy, but if that’s correct there’d be a awful lot of competition from PL and high end European clubs…I reckon!!!

    • Cuh736

If we would buy Remy, we might as well keep mitro.

  • Wor Monga

If there’s any truth in that rumour…he’s gone…Rafa has no faith in him either as a single striker, alongside Gayle in a strike duo…or even to keep himself under control and on the field in the heat of the challenge…

…the lads likeable, but he’s nowhere near the finished article here maybe in France he’ll be better suited!!!

  • Desree

Two seasons. One or two quality goals. The serbian Mark Hately.

    • HarryHype59

      Hately was better than Mitro!

  • Mxpx

Selling mitrovic is a mistake Gayle will not cut it at premier league level mitrovic isn’t the greatest striker we’ve ever had but given the chance could score 10-15 over the next season if not more I wouldn’t say the same for Gayle we won’t get away with asking him to run in behind defences in the premiership getting atsu Murphy yedlin and Ritchie firing in crosses to mitrovic will get us results people are quick to do mitrovic down the truth is we’ve never played to his strengths look at his record for Serbia whilst he’s been a Newcastle player we have the ability to accommodate him even if we don’t setup every week with him in mind having him on the bench for a plan b and switching up the way we play would be a great option

    • Albert Stubbins

I take your point but international football in the main is like championship level football-apart from the top half a dozen or so teams. Mitro wouldnt score against a top team- Im saying this without researching who he has scored against internationally but am confident. Mitro is too slow and he has no explosive pace in the box-is very predictable and doesnt fit into a 4-5-1 system, definitely not at premiership level. If we can get even half of the figure being mooted it would be good business. The problem with offering players to clubs tells its own story- it means that no one is interested enough to contact the selling club in the first place.

      • Cuh736

But he did score against top teams two seasons ago for us

        • Albert Stubbins

You could also argue that his lack of goals contributed to us going down?

          • Mike Adam

Albert, what a ridiculous statement! No good service into the box equals no goals, that was our problem 2 years ago in the Prem. Last time I checked football was a team game mate.

          • Albert Stubbins

Mike- he has had a bundle of chances this season against supposedly weaker opposition- he doesn’t hit the target nearly enough. He is too slow- He cannot link up play and get in the box as a main striker has to do- his positional sense is woeful. I cannot for the life of me see what you see in him- thankfully Rafa clearly doesnt rate him so small mercy for that. you’re right about the team game bit- I fully agree with you there mate but in every team you need a focal point- Mitro isnt’ it. Let’s forget a bout sentiment here- I would have loved him to succeed- he embodies everything good about out great club but he is nowhere near good enough for the league we are now in IMO.

          • Mike Adam

Well Albert we are on the same side here, we both want our club to succeed! We will disagree on Mitro, but only time will tell. I personally don’t agree with Rafa on everything though. What striker/s would you like to see us bring in. I would like to see us get Vincent Aboubakar from Porto, who was on loan at Besiktas last season. Let’s go Rafa get some quality players in please!

          • Albert Stubbins

I think we’ve missed a trick with Hernandez. Proven in this league and in our price range. Hopefully Rafa pulls one out of the bag. I like the lad from man city too and he will struggle to get a game this season.

          • Cuh736

Of course we could say that. But remember Defoe scored 15 or more last year, so the team as a whole comes in as well

      • Mike Adam

He scored against Arsenal in Champions League with Anderlecht.

    • Mike Adam

Well said, mate! Agree with every word.

  • Mrkgw

I like Mitro but reckon that his temperament is the reason behind Rafa looking to sell. Lets face it, when he blows a fuse on the field he is a liability which inevitably leads to his substitution or bookings. You cant have that additional burden at this level.

    • Albert Stubbins

i think its even a little more obvious than that mate- lack of talent I’m sorry to say.

      • Blackburn1066

        here, here, mate spot on

      • Mike Adam

Watch his goal against Wales last month, I am sorry to say that I disagree!

    • Mike Adam

What was wrong with his temperament last season in the Championship?

      • Mrkgw

I think it was the Wolves game when he was subbed at half time as Rafa couldn’t risk leaving him on the pitch. Please don’t tell me that you haven’t seen him blow a fuse when playing for us……! Cripes.

  • HarryHype59

I wanted him to be a success but he actually has gone backward under Benetiz, due to lack of game time. Even if the club were to get a 16m bid for him (unlikely) his wages will pose a problem.

  • Taz

Can’t see anyone paying £16million, the bloke can’t hit the back of the net if it’s on a plate and lets face it there have been some sitters. Lets just say I’m not his biggest a fan

  • Cuh736

If he played consistently last season, he would have ripped the division apart

    • Mike Adam

Thank you! Strikers need consistant playing time, especially young ones! He also had 6 assists in just over 1100 minutes played. An overlooked plus to his game. Give him a chance!

  • Steve Pearce

A nice wad of cash in the bank and Loic Remy back in black and white…..

    • Mike Adam

Yeah, he loves the black and white. Couldn’t wait to get out of here last time!
