The agent of Pepe Reina, Manuel Garcia Quilon, was earlier today reported to have travelled to Naples for talks with Napoli officials regarding the goalkeeper’s future.

This followed ever increasing claims that Reina was set to be reunited with his old boss Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United.

Reports at lunchtime from Gazzetta dello Sport and beIN Sports journalist, Tancredi Palmeri, broke the news that Newcastle had allegedly agreed personal terms with the Napoli goalkeeper and that now it simply came down to Pepe Reina deciding whether he wanted to stay in Italy or return to the Premier League with Newcastle United.

Manuel Garcia Quilon indeed met with Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis today to discuss the situation regarding the goalkeeper, who only has one year left on his contract.

After the meeting Reina’s agent met Italian media and has declared that the former Liverpool and Bayern Munich keeper will see out the remaining year of his contract at Napoli.

Manuel Garcia Quilon talking to

“Pepe will stay at Napoli until the end of his contract.

“Certain issues have nothing to do with what happens on the pitch and do not interest us.

“He is staying at Napoli until 2018.”

Pepe Reina turns 35 in August but having constantly played at a high level, he would have been e a great signing if Rafa could have pulled this deal off.

Rafa signed Pepe Reina for Liverpool from Villarreal back in 2005, a perfect example of how ruthless he can be when making decisions regarding improving his team/squad.

Less than two months earlier, Jerzy Dudek had been the hero in Istanbul, as Rafa and Liverpool lifted the Champions League trophy.

However, Pepe Reina was brought in to be instant first choice for the following season, with Dudek relegated to the bench.

The 2013/14 season saw Rafa Benitez and his former keeper reunited, Reina going to Napoli on loan from Liverpool for the season and they won the Coppa Italia together.

    Has the Rafalution started yet?

  • Jezza

Why couldn’t have just stated in the headline that the player wasn’t coming instead of making us click the link and scroll down a load of waffle to eventually find out.

    • Andy Mac

This is the age of clickbait Jezza. Its all about the advertising.

  • Alreet

Kind of happy he isnt coming. Think we should get rid of krul and selz. The time has come. Having darlow elliott and the woodman as a reserve is fine by me. How many keepers do we need anyway.

  • Andy Mac

TBH I wasnt sold on the idea of paying top wages for a 35yo keeper. Surely if Sels and TK leave The Dilsh can handle a year in the top flight and next season it’ll be Freddie time !
