Newcastle United official announcement: Second pre-season friendly in Germany confirmed

A bit like buses, one German pre-season friendly was announced on Thursday, and now Friday brings news of another one.

Yesterday it was confirmed that Newcastle would play Wolfsburg on Wednesday 2 August and at the time, the club warned fans not to book travel as they may want to also see a second friendly in Germany which would be announced shortly.

Only 24 hours later, that has been confirmed as Mainz, the game to be played on Saturday 29 July, only four days before the Wolfsburg game.

Official Newcastle United announcement – 23 June 2017:

‘Newcastle United will face Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05 in a pre-season fixture next month, it has been confirmed.

Rafa Benitez’s side will travel to Germany to take on Mainz on Saturday, 29th July, with the game kicking off at 4pm local time (CEST).

It will take place at the 34,000-capacity Opel Arena, home of Rouven Schroder’s side, and will be the first of two pre-season trips to Germany for the Magpies, who will also play VfL Wolfsburg away from home on Wednesday, 2nd August.

Ticket details will be announced in due course.’

This is now the fifth friendly announced so far with all of them away from home.

However, there will be a home one at St James Park sometime on the first weekend of August (on or around Saturday 5th August).

The friendly schedule so far is:

Friday 14 July – Hearts away 7.45pm

Saturday 22 July – Preston away 3pm

Wednesday 26 July – Bradford away 7.30pm

Saturday 29 July – Mainz away 4pm local time (3pm UK time)

Wednesday 2 August – Wolfsburg away 4pm local time (3pm UK time)

Whilst they are a Bundesliga side, like Wolfsburg they shouldn’t present too formidable an opposition.

Wolfsburg finished third bottom last season and had to play an all or nothing two-legged play-off against Eintracht Braunschweig (Wolfsburg won both games 1-0 to survive at least another season in the German top tier) of the second tier. Mainz only finished above Wolfsburg on goal difference and avoided that relegation play-off.

Newcastle United official announcement 22 June 2017:

‘Newcastle United will travel to Germany to face VfL Wolfsburg in August as they continue their preparations for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

The Magpies – who have already confirmed friendlies against Heart of Midlothian, Preston North End and Bradford City – will take on VfL Wolfsburg on Wednesday, 2nd August.

The game will take place at the AOK Stadion, the home of Wolfsburg’s development and women’s teams, and will kick-off at 4pm local time (CEST).

Supporters are advised not to arrange travel immediately, as there is likely to be another pre-season friendly in Germany announced in the coming days.

Ticket information – plus details of a home friendly on the first weekend in August – will be announced in due course.’
