Friendly in Germany announced but Newcastle fans told not to make travel arrangements yet
Newcastle fans have a trip to Wolfsburg to look forward to.
However, supporters have been warned against booking travel just yet, as the club say that they expect to shortly announce another friendly in Germany.
The inference of course is that Newcastle fans might want to make a bit of holiday/trip of it and take in both games.
This is the fourth friendly announced so far with all of them away from home.
However, there will be a home one at St James Park sometime on the first weekend of August (on or around Saturday 5th August).
The friendly schedule so far is:
Friday 14 July – Hearts away 7.45pm
Saturday 22 July – Preston away 3pm
Wednesday 26 July – Bradford away 7.30pm
Wednesday 2 August – Wolfsburg away 4pm local time (3pm UK time)
The other planned friendly in Germany will surely then fall between the games against Bradford and Wolfsburg, as the match at SJP follows shortly after this confirmed German date.
Whilst they are a Bundesliga side, they shouldn’t present too formidable an opposition.
Wolfsburg finished third bottom last season and had to play an all or nothing two-legged play-off against Eintracht Braunschweig of the second tier.
They won both games 1-0 to survive at least another season in the German top tier.
One other connection is that just like Newcastle, Wolfsburg were unfortunate enough to employ Steve McClaren as Manager.
Coincidentally, he only lasted 9 months at both clubs, in the case of our German friends they sacked him in February 2011 after a disastrous part season at the club.
Newcastle United official announcement:
‘Newcastle United will travel to Germany to face VfL Wolfsburg in August as they continue their preparations for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
The Magpies – who have already confirmed friendlies against Heart of Midlothian, Preston North End and Bradford City – will take on VfL Wolfsburg on Wednesday, 2nd August.
The game will take place at the AOK Stadion, the home of Wolfsburg’s development and women’s teams, and will kick-off at 4pm local time (CEST).
Supporters are advised not to arrange travel immediately, as there is likely to be another pre-season friendly in Germany announced in the coming days.
Ticket information – plus details of a home friendly on the first weekend in August – will be announced in due course.’
