Two Newcastle players hoping to return from injury for title decider

Both Dwight Gayle and Vurnon Anita could return to Newcastle’s squad for Barnsley.

The pair were pictured training with the rest of the squad on Thursday and the local media are reporting that the pair are hoping to be involved.

Difficult to see Rafa Benitez taking any risks with any player, as only the honour of finishing top is at stake, rather than anything of substance such as promotion.

The United boss made a point of saying that some of his changes for the Cardiff match seven days ago were due to tiredness and/or as a precaution against injury, suggesting he was both looking after the welfare of his players and potentially trying to make sure certain individuals would be available for the sold out finale in front of the home crowd.

Both Vurnon Anita and especially Dwight Gayle, have played a key part in this successful bounce back at the first attempt and you also have the possibility that this will be the Dutchman’s last game for Newcastle after five years at St James Park.

Along with Christian Atsu, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran, Anita sees his contract finish at the end of June, with no sign of anything happening so far in terms of an extension.

I think it is a knocking bet that Rafa Benitez will be using all three subs on Sunday as he looks to reward as many of his key performers this season with an appearance.

A nice way to finish things off with a thank you to those players AND a victory to send us into the summer months without football.
