Relegation meant leaving the likes of Paul Merson, Michael Owen and Mark Lawrenson behind.
So there were some compensations…!
However, August will see Newcastle fans once again experiencing the delights of match predictions from the likes of this trio.
Just to whet your appetite though, have a look at this table of Mark Lawrenson predictions for the current Premier League season:
It is funny that whenever Alan Shearer says anything vaguely pro-Newcastle he gets criticised as being biased, yet Mark Lawrenson and others go relatively untouched.
In case you missed it, have a look at the top of this table and see what his predictions have been for Liverpool in the 36 games so far.
Lawrenson has predicted wins in 26 of their matches, draws in 10 of them, and defeats in…none of them.
For West Ham v Liverpool on Sunday he has forecast a 1-1 draw and that then leaves only the final game of the season when it is Liverpool v Middlesbrough at Anfield.
Clearly he won’t be predicting an away win for the Smoggies and so Mark Lawrenson will have forecast an entire season without Liverpool getting beat.
Who did he play for again…?
