Newcastle interested in Jeison Murillo – Reports

Rafa Benitez is interested in signing Jeison Murillo, according to media reports today.

The centre-back turns 25 on Saturday and the Gazzetta dello Sport claims their information is that Newcastle want the defender as part of their bid to establish themselves back in the Premier League.

Inter Milan are looking to rebuild themselves after a disappointing season, currently seventh (could drop to eighth) in Serie A with one match remaining, fully 29 points behind champions Juventus.

The Columbian international had been first choice since his arrival in summer 2015 but fell out of favour as this current season progressed, only starting four league matches in the past three months.

The Italian newspaper believes Inter would accept an offer in the region of around £10m-£13m for a player who cost them £7m two years ago, when he was recruited from Spanish side Granada.

A number of other clubs have also been linked with Jeison Murillo who has 25 caps for Columbia, with Tottenham, Monaco and Borussia Dortmund all credited with an interest.

However, Newcastle could be favourites according to the reports with more chance of first team football on offer as Rafa Benitez tries to up the quality to deal with a return to the English top tier.

After picking up four red cards in his first season at Inter, Murillo appears to have calmed down a bit and hasn’t been sent off at all this season.

With Rafa having managed at both Inter and Napoli, you would imagine that he will still have good contacts in Italian football, to give him a bit of a guide on whether a player like Jeison Murillo would be worth pursuing.

Another one for the ever growing list anyway!
