Newcastle 3 Barnsley 0  – Sunday 7 May 12 Noon

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Jamie Swan:

“And to the Championship – so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen and GOOD RIDDANCE!

“Terrible referees, bitter fans. Tatty bye!”

Leazes Park Ender:

“Delirious scenes. It’s not sunk in yet. This is a day that will live long in the memory. Wow.

“In a season of 46 games the battle for top went down to the final few minutes.

“Only Newcastle could haul Brighton back from a seven point lead with three games left!

“After last summer’s relegation this is such a nice contrast for all Newcastle United fans.

“News of the Villa equaliser was quite a moment. Brighton have really stumbled over the last few hurdles while Benitez has masterminded a great run.

“Back to the Premier League come August. The hard work starts here.”

George Stainsby:

“After the last two walking away with it promotions, it’s nice to be on the right side of a last minute goal.

“Thanks, Villa!”

Toon Bano:

“Great end to the season.

“I said last week that Brighton would crack under the pressure at Villa but when they were against 10 men and 1-0 up, I resigned myself to defeat.

“Hopefully this will strengthen Rafa’s hand even more over Ashley as they are apparently going to speak about the future today.

“I suggest having the Championship trophy on the desk Rafa…..!!

Paul Lyon:

“Dramatic ending to a long old season.

“Great to be on the right side of events today, sometimes it seems some things are just meant to be.

“The scenes around the ground as news of 10 men Villa’s goal came through will stick in the memory for a long while.

“Topped a fantastic season off. Been a long one but worth it.

“46 games and it comes down to the last minute of the season. Just amazing.

“Every emotion going again. The roar when villa goal came through – amazing.”

Nat Seaton:

“GET IN!!!!

“What a way to win it.

“I’ll stop short of thanking Villa as WE are the ones who won it.

“See you in the Premier League…”

Jamie Smith:

“That was better than winning it all from the off.

“Gayle scores then it suddenly got round that today’s Smithmesiter General, Jack Grealish, had handed us the title.

“Promotion was the key but what a way to do it, hopefully that Championship trophy isn’t the last one we see Rafa holding with black and white ribbons.

“Now, beer.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Even by Newcastle United’s standards that was utterly crazy.

“Winning the league after the tough breaks we have had this season is a magnificent achievement.

“If Rafa stays this summer who knows what will be doing on the final day next season.

As much as I have a soft spot for Brighton and respect for Chris Hughton I thought their premature display of Championship winners 2017 signs, opera singers, champions scarves last week showed a lack of class. Made today even sweeter now for cake, champagne and a party only just bought lol 😉

Thing is for Brighton this is a fantastic achievement, for us many will see this as par. Never was going to be a picnic, sheer number of games plus incompetent officials saw to that. Both should be proud and celebrate

  • Leicester Mag

Fantastic end to the slog that is the championship. Few wobbles but a fitting end. What a shame though that Sky robbed exiles of the chance to see it. Let’s hope we never grace it again over to you now Mr Biscuits.

  • HenrySlade

We did it! Well done to Rafa and the players. Can’t wait for next season.

    At last…………congrats boys…..4ever Toon army….fantastic end to season……

  • Jezza

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Best atmosphere at a home game for years. An unforgettable moment when everybody was still stood up celebrating Dwight Gayle’s goal then a huge roar broke out with the news from Villa Park. It’s those kind of moments that make all the misery and suffering of following Newcastle United worthwhile.

  • Lord

Fantastic. If only the Premiership title race was as exciting.

    Roll on August….

  • Alex

There’s your trophy Fat Boy, now do one.

  • FairsCup69

Fantastic end to the season. The toon seemed a bit muted aftereards though. Not as exciting as 1984 or 1993 but I’m maybe showing my age!

    • Grahame Johnson

I was emotionally drained and wandered home like a zombie thinking today doesn’t feel real

    • Jezza

True, today was great but 84 and 93 were better. Warmer too, it has to be said, ha ha, it was bleeding freezing at the match today. I spent the entire half time interval and first 15 minutes of the second half trying to get the circulation back into my fingers.

      • Leicester Mag

1993 Never forget that first half v Leicester 6-0 at half time ! Vintage Keegan.

        • FairsCup69

There were crazy scenes in the Bigg Market that night. It seemed like the beginning of a fantastic journey; and it was. Let’s just hope this promotion isn’t wasted and we don’t find ourselves back in the Championship again…..

  • Andy Mac

Thankfully this means no more Micky “Fanboy” Gray on CH5 and no David “Gonzo” Prutton on Skysports. Definite fringe benefits.🙄

  • Scottpaige

Just a fantastic feeling. For once it happened to us.

    Great feeling today.

  • Desree

    Is ashley selling now

On reflection, this season was truly enjoyable. Winning the league was the cherry on top of a season that had many moments of drama and excitement. The best part was that expectations were met for the first time in many years. Credit to Rafa and the players. Looking forward to the next season with hope and optimism.
