The Newcastle and Brighton title race went right down to the last day and indeed the final minute.
After nine months and 46 matches, one pivotal moment swung it United’s way with only seconds remaining – Jack Grealish destroying Chris Hughton’s title hopes.
Newcastle and Rafa Benitez had of course already done their bit, a 3-0 victory over Barnsley meant a total of 94 points.
This points total has only been bettered twice in the past 10 years, Leicester in 2013/14 and Newcastle themselves in 2009/10.
So if Brighton had managed 95 points, that gives a context of just how well they have done this year, even if they had to settle for ‘only’ 93 as their final total.
Back at St James Park, the fans didn’t mind, but there was a serious wait as very slowly the sponsor’s arch and platform was brought out by a very small group of blokes.
The supporters waiting for the trophy/medal ceremony and celebrations to begin.
Spare a thought though for Villa Park and this sad sight below, as of course they needed to have the exact same champions podium ready for use…
Maybe the defining image though of Brighton’s dramatic late collapse and only one point from the final nine is this one…
Whilst this photo has done the rounds on social media, you can only imagine how much mainstream media coverage it would have got if the roles had been reversed and Brighton had snatched the title from NUFC, and this was somebody selling Newcastle United ‘Champions’ scarves!
