Barnsley have named the Newcastle United player they fear on Sunday.

The visitors attempting to derail NUFC’s attempts to end the season as champions.

The identity of Newcastle’s star man may surprise you just a little…

In the absence of Gayle and Ritchie, the official Barnsley website has picked out Mohamed Diame!

Yes, with three Championship goals and three assists all season, despite playing in the free role behind the main striker, Diame has been picked out.

According to the Barnsley end of things, Mohamed Diame has played a ‘starring role for the Toon Army this season’. Hmmm.

In reality of course, Diame must go down as one of the biggest disappointments of the season, with the midfielder paying Rafa back in peanuts after the Newcastle boss put so much faith in him with a big contract last summer for a player who turns 30 this summer.

Apparently, Mohamed Diame’s ‘ability to link midfield and attack have been key to Newcastle’s success’.

I must have missed that game!

Official Barnsley website:

‘Their Star Man

With both Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie ruled out due to injury and suspension respectively, Newcastle will be looking towards Mo Diame to help the Club clinch the Championship title.

The powerful midfielder’s arrival at St. James’ Park raised more than a few eyebrows last August, with the Senegal international leaving Hull – who had just won promotion to the Premier League – to join Rafael Benitez’s new-look outfit.

After playing a starring role for the Toon Army this season however and with Hull in a desperate scrap to avoid relegation, the 29-year-old will feel his decision has been more than justified.

Although he has only netted six and assisted three for Benitez’s side this term, Diame’s energy, as well as his ability to link midfield and attack have been key to Newcastle’s success.

The French born midfield maestro has already proved he can cut it in the top flight with Wigan, West Ham and Hull and he will be determined to put in another big performance on Sunday to ensure his new side enters the Premier League as champions. ‘

Diame looked like a good signing judging from his stats at Hull last season when he played as an attacking MF for most of the season. He hit 10 goals and had 4 assists including the winning goal at Wembley against Wednesday in the play off final. Not quite sure why it didnt happen for him this season ?

      1 word
      STRANGE !!!

  • Jamie Smith

Hopefully this is reflective of the view at Barnsley as opposed to an isolated incident of lazy journalism and they’ll waste all their resource marking him, leaving Shelvey the space to tear them apart

We need to sell SloMo to the Mackems

      £30 million from Spurs!

      • MichaelMaximusMoose

        that`s a plan

    • MadMag83

Promoted with two clubs, do we want to take the risk of them coming back up?

  • CaptainCaveman

Perhaps they think there’s a danger that he’s due a good game?

  • Steve Smith

He is a danger though. He isn’t scoring and assisting but he breaks up a lot of attacks and recycles a lot of the play.

He creates a lot of space for shelvey to work in. He’s not flashy but he’s definitely had more of an impact than a lot of people give him credit for.

Because he sits behind the striker it is very basically “how many goals and assists has he got?”. His role has been far removed from a typical “10”.

I get what you mean though because the best presses are done as a unit and him and Gayle as the front line played a big part in conceding fewer goals in the first half of the season.

    • MadMag83

Precisely. Gayle and Diame linked up well before January. Diame offers more defensively than Perez in that role. I’m not sure why some fans think we would have a world class number 10 in the Championship! May not be good enough for the upper reaches of the Premier League but we’re promoted so it’s job done.

I would of needed 24 guess’s out of our 25 man squad.

  • Mark Scott

He is capable of a match winning performance, it’s just we’ve yet to see it regularly enough. I think he’s been one of the big disappointments this season to be honest, I expected more from him.
