Newcastle v Wigan player ratings from fans – One star man but four players struggling
The results of the Newcastle v Wigan player ratings by fans.
No surprise to see who the choice of Newcastle fans was for man of the match, like most of the rest of the team Matt Ritchie (7.7) worked his socks off but he also had that added quality and composure to score the winning goal.
Another six players managed respectable/average scores, getting 6.0 or better.
Dwight Gayle (6.8) looked a lot sharper than of late and deserved his goal that opened the scoring, his 22nd of the season.
Jonjo Shelvey (6.5) was third best, didn’t really get into the game as much as normal and his frustration showed at times with the lack of teammates able to play at their best on Saturday.
Karl Darlow (6.4) could do nothing about the well taken goal and otherwise made a couple of decent saves and looked comfortable.
Vurnon Anita and Grant Hanley put in competent performances and each scored 6.2.
Unfortunately, defensive partner and captain, Jamaal Lascelles (4.7), once again struggled. His lack of pace yet again a big weakness and he was very much at fault for Wigan’s equaliser.
Elsewhere, the midfield trio of Gouffran (4.8), Diame (4.9) and Colback (5.3) offered virtually nothing going forward and must be all under threat on Wednesday night with the likes of Hayden, Perez and Atsu hoping to get a chance.
