Newcastle have been made favourites to sign Ryan Shawcross this summer.

Bookies have installed St James Park as the 5/4 favourite next destination for the Stoke City defender.

An interesting name has been put forward on Wednesday afternoon, with Ryan Shawcross claimed to be Newcastle’s number one transfer target if promoted.

This follows the Independent reporting on Wednesday that they understand that Rafa Benitez sees Shawcross as his top summer transfer target and the man to build a Premier League defence around.

The 29 year old central defender has only a year to run on his contract and Rafa will make his move this summer once promotion is confirmed, according to the report.

Ladbrokes Latest Betting:

Ryan Shawcross – Next Permanent Club

5/4 Newcastle United

3/1 Brighton & Hove Albion

5/1 West Bromwich Albion

8/1 Leicester City

10/1 Watford

12/1 Hull City

Ciaran Clark is indisputably Newcastle’s best current defender and a possible Shawcross/Clark combination would be an interesting proposition.

No new contract contract has been made and with Ryan Shawcross turning 30 in October, maybe Stoke will see it as being the time to cash in on a player who has given them 10 years great service – but who they might not want to give a new three or four year massive contract to.

This is exactly the type of potential transfer where you could see Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley not seeing eye to eye on.

The Manager seeing an experienced and ready-made Captain who could be a big asset in helping Newcastle adjust to life/survive in the top tier again.

Whilst on the other hand, the NUFC owner will no doubt see a player who will turn 30 two months into the season and with no probable resale value, would still cost probably at least £10m and would expect to be on top Premier League level wages.

Newcastle were linked with Ryan Shawcross ahead of summer 2014 but nothing came of it, as Mike Ashley refused to look at established Premier League players and instead  went for ‘bargains’ overseas.

Newcastle supporters will no doubt be hoping for exciting signings at the front end of the team if promoted – but the defence is certainly also desperately needing extra quality.

Ryan Shawcross has often been linked with the teams at the top but never made the move. I must admit I can’t help thinking that there is little difference between Shawcross and Gary Cahill, apart from the fact that the latter moved on to Chelsea and as result becomes an England regular, whereas the Stoke player has only had 16 minutes in a friendly.

Only missing a couple of games through injury this campaign, Ryan Shawcross is still first choice for Mark Hughes and has played 29 times in the Premier League this season.

we could do with a good centre back but Fatso prefers under 26, low salary & a sell on value
the guy`s a shopkeeper & has no interest in Nufc, only the cash it can generate
plus the guy is a Scumbag !

    • Wor Lass

All true but it depends whether or not he really got worried that Rafa would walk after the lack of action in the Jan window. I reckon he wants Rafa to stay and that Rafa`s strong enough to say, “Only if I`m backed in this summer`s window!” Where nufc`s concerned, my biggest weakness is eternal optimism and I just hope it isn`t being misplaced here (like it usually is!!).

      • Jezza

Fatman doesn’t need Rafa to stay. If we get promoted Rafa will have served his purpose as far as fatman is concerned and he can move on. Don’t forget that Pardew is available again and he kept us up with no money to spend throughout his previous tenure as Newcastle manager and he;ll do the job for a quarter of Rafa’s salary…..fatman’s thinking, not mine.

        • Wor Lass

Jezza – me and you could be bok ends: the optimist and the pessimist. I`m not saying you`re wrong but I sincerely hope you are!

          • Jezza

I hope I’m wrong too but past precedent based on the way Ashley has run this club for 10 years fills me with dread at what might happen in the summer.

        • Vodkamagpie

No, that’s your thinking, pointless to debate with you, your mind is fixed and set, or maybe you just don’t like fat people in general

          • Jezza

Good grief, I despair. You think I don’t like Ashley simply because he’s fat. Unbelievable. I simply don’t like the way he has been running this club for the last 10 years.

          • Vodkamagpie

Fatman every two seconds is abit annoying. And other football owners outside the top 6 are just racking up the trophies.

          • Jezza

You don’t get it do you or at least you don’t want to. It seems you are being deliberately crass. Now you are suggesting I don’t like Ashley because he hasn’t delivered a trophy. You seem to have decided that my dislike of Ashley has got absolutely nothing to do with him selling all our best players, James Milner, Andy Carroll. Kevin Nolan, Yoan Cabaye, Jose Enrique, Demba Ba etc etc, constructively dismissing Kevin Keegan, sacking Chris Hughton, appointing a series of disastrous managers such as Kinnear, Pardew, Carver and McClaren, relegating us twice in 9 years, long term under investment in the transfer market, allowing idiots like Wise, Carr and Charnley to blow our meagre transfer budget on a load of rubbish, re-naming St James’s Park the Sports Direct Arena and covering every inch of the stadium with free advertising for his core business, allowing legalised loan sharks to be our shirt sponsors, taking away the singing section in our ground, making fans fork out 40 quid for membership before they can buy away tickets…..none of that has got anything to do with how I feel about Ashley, oh no, I just don’t like him because he’s fat and because we haven’t been winning trophies since he took over. Give it a rest will you.

        • Damon Horner

Seems like you all know Mike Ashley very well…

          • Jezza

Well I think we should all have a good idea as to how Ashley’s mind works by now.

  • MadMag83

West Brom or Leicester is more likely.

  • Blackburn1066

I think we should keep our minds on will we beat Leeds then what plan have we got to beat the next team. When we are in the Prem then we can think about who we would like through the door.

  • Scottpaige

Let’s just get promotion sorted first. !!!
