On Thursday we asked when Newcastle clash with Leeds, would you want Daryl Murphy or Aleksandar Mitrovic, or both/neither of them to play up front.
Rafa Benitez having revealed that Dwight Gayle hasn’t picked up a serious injury but is only doing light training at the minute and not joining in with the group sessions, so definitely misses tonight.
That leaves the Manager with the dilemma of who to play up front.
Daryl Murphy has recently been selected both in the team and on the bench ahead of Aleksandar Mitrovic.
However, the number 45 came on at Sheffield Wednesday and looked quite sharp in a brief cameo, setting up Shelvey’s goal when chesting the ball down and the keeper unable to hold his initial shot.
Those final 12 minutes saw Mitrovic and Murphy on the pitch together for a rare brief occasion.
The only time they have started a match in the same team was the away FA Cup game at Birmingham, where after only a few minutes Murphy scored the opening goal AND Mitrovic ended up being carried off with a nasty looking leg injury received in the melee as the ball went in the net.
So what has the fan vote decided?
Thanks to everybody who took the time to vote and here is the outcome:
58% Play both Mitrovic and Murphy
22% Play only Aleksandar Mitrovic
17% Play only Daryl Murphy
3% Play neither Murphy or Mitrovic
So, a massive vote of support for playing both strikers but it would be a massive surprise to see Rafa depart from his usual one striker plus Diame or Perez.
As for Murphy or Mitrovic, interesting to see the voting so close in terms of playing either of them, with 22% Mitrovic and 17% Murphy.
