Newcastle on brink of automatic promotion as Huddersfield & Reading lose

Defeats for Reading and Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon mean that Newcastle now have clear sight of automatic promotion.

Relegation strugglers Forest had already defeated top two sides Brighton and Newcastle at the City Ground and today they added Huddersfield to that list.

Elsewhere, Reading’s faint hopes of the top two places were smashed by six first half Norwich goals, plus one after the break.

This all means that this if Newcastle beat Sheffield Wednesday today and then Huddersfield failed to beat Preston on Friday in a 3pm kick-off…Newcastle would then get automatic promotion if they beat Leeds (If Huddersfield drew they could still match Newcastle’s 90 points but their goal difference weakness means realistically it would all be over).

The Newcastle v Leeds match was sold out a couple of weeks ago and already promises to be a cracker, just how much better would it be if Rafa Benitez and his team could be promoted that night?

Friday night result:

QPR 1 Brighton 2

Saturday afternoon’s results:

Fulham 3 Ipswich 1

Leeds 3 Preston 0

Norwich 7 Reading 1

Nottingham Forest 2 Huddersfield 0
