Newcastle 1 Leeds 1 – Friday 14 April 2017 7.45pm

There are matches where you are watching the game and you think we are battering these and then you get home and the stats say something totally different.

Then there are games like Friday night.

The first 10 minutes or so was quit even and Leeds hit the bar and Darlow saved the follow up, then their next shot on target was in the 95th minute.

In between, Newcastle really did batter Leeds United.

How we didn’t win that is beyond me.

Well it’s not, basically you had three factors.

Some brilliant point blank saves from Rob Green in the Leeds goal, a couple of desperate but successful last ditch blocks which diverted Newcastle efforts just wide, then of course wasteful finishing and no real natural finisher with Dwight Gayle missing – with the possible exception of Matt Ritchie who has 15 goals this season.

Just look at the stats below…

Newcastle had 22 shots to 4 from Leeds, plus 19 corners to 0.

Gutted we didn’t win but best all round performance for ages…apart from putting the ball in the net.

Thought Isaac Hayden was immense as well on his return AND we got a game out of Mitrovic!

Frustrating beyond belief, Had a decent shout for a penalty for a pull back on Mbemba. They probably messed about in the corner too much when they could have actually had attacks. Still we can still lose 1 and draw one even if Huddersfield win every game.

The stats just tell us how poor our Strikers are Mitro is a cart horse

    • Steve Smith

Mitro was phenomenal, he bullied their centrebacks all game and even got back to steal the ball from them in our half a few times.

      • Coach Clagnut

        Psst…he’s a troll.

      • Geordiegiants

I don’t think phenomenal is quite the word, but he had a decent game.

      • Albert Stubbins

First and foremost Strikers are in the team to score goals- irrespective of whatever else they do on the pitch- ultimately they will be judged on the amount of goals they score for the team. A striker simply cannot be described as phenomenal is he hasnt scored- its a contradiction in terms. I agree he did ok but at the same time he never looked like scoring so it could also be argued that he was ineffective.

I’m not his biggest fan but Mitro was up there for MOTM today

We have gone through the entire season with one decent striker on our books and he’s out injured now. Failure to adequately strengthen our attack last summer is costing us valuable points in this crucial run in to our promotion campaign.

the Toon fans have forgotten or have never seen great football

  • Coach Clagnut

    Lies, damned lies and statistics.

Very good performance but could have done with being a touch more clinical in front of goal. Most teams will keep the ball in the corner to play down time in that position. Damned if you do damned if you don’t. Bang on for a second, lose possession, get hit on the break and everyone says why didn’t we get it in the corner and play down the clock. Went to sleep at the end. Poor marking led to the foul by Colback. Free kick into the box cleared but pressure on. Marking in the box abysmal,
It happens. We have been dominated and sneaked points before so can’t cry when one goes against us.
Take heart from the performance. Thought Mbemba was excellent, Hayden excellent on his return. Mitro led the line really well. Team in general totally dominated Leeds. Keep our heads and play anything like that and we will go up. Title may slip away but maybe not and promotion priority anyway.

  • Steve Smith

It’s been a common theme this season of the other teams defences really upping their game and playing above their own capabilities when facing us. I genuinely believe the games will be easier in the premier league as we won’t be the scalp.

  • Paul Patterson

Just goes to show, stats mean very little . .

  • Ian Mcgoogan

Newcastle utd players dont no how to score goals what does your manager teach you lot on the training ground 😠

  • Michael Lisle

Best team performance for a while with Mbemba showing he is our best centre back on that showing-he can defend AND bring the ball out of defence in contrast to Lascelles. We seemed to fall apart as soon as the 5 minutes extra board was shown and spent the time complaining and trying to time waste. As poor as the timekeeping is in this league, you have to deal with it. The panic seemed to spread from the usually calm Rafa to the players on the pitch.
