Rafa Benitez hasn’t been caught out too many times this season but the Manager has revealed he brought one Newcastle star back too early.
Always usually erring on the side of caution when players are coming back from injury, the United boss has revealed that he made the wrong call with Isaac Hayden.
Rafa Benitez now thinks that it was ‘too demanding’ and that he won’t be taking ‘any risks’ with Isaac Hayden, or any of his other recovering players.
After the win over Burton on Wednesday night, the Newcastle Manager had been hopeful that a couple more days of treatment would have put the former Arsenal player right for today’s match at Hillsborough.
However, Rafa has now confirmed that Hayden definitely misses after not making the anticipated progress, as does Jack Colback who hasn’t recovered from the virus that kept him out of Wednesday’ game.
Rolando Aarons and Ciaran Clark are also still out, though it sounds as if DeAndre Yedlin could be a possibility for Leeds on Friday, with the United boss indicating that he is progressing well in training.
“We will not take any risks with these players (Isaac Hayden and Jack Colback) because if you are not fully fit and you put a player in, then you don’t know what will happen.
“We needed Isaac Hayden last weekend (played last 20 minutes v Wigan) after one month, maybe it was too demanding for him that game.
“We have to be sure now that we don’t take any risks.
“Colback still has a virus.
“DeAndre Yedlin has been training but still we have to wait. I hope he will play before the end of the season.
“He’s been doing almost everything in the training sessions but we have to be careful with one or two things – he is doing almost everything, defending one against one, two against two, that kind of thing.
“Mitrovic is in the squad and also Murphy, Gayle too – so we have three strikers.”
