The Newcastle team v Cardiff has just been announced.

Rafa Benitez makes five changes to the team that beat Preston 4-1.

The United boss had already indicated a number of players would be rested/make sure they’d be ok for Barnsley in front of the home crowd next Sunday.

Anita, Ritchie, Lascelles, Mitrovic and Shelvey have all dropped out from the side that confirmed promotion on Monday.

In their place come Yedlin, Mbemba, Colback, Diame and Murphy.

Keeper Rob Elliot has been named as Captain.

Newcastle United:

Elliot, Yedlin, Mbemba, Clark, Dummett, Perez, Colback, Hayden, Atsu, Diame, Murphy

Darlow, Sterry, Haidara, Lazaar, Shelvey, Gouffran, Mitrovic

No JJ, No Ritchie, No Gayle, No points !

    • Andy Mac

Wow who would have thought ? I was actually gonna say “No Goals” rather than no points but good luck to Atsu. Doing his talking on the pitch presumably hoping there’s still life in the transfer rumour ?

  • steve

As long as there’s still a chance of winning that league that line up shows a massive lack of respect to the fans.

    • Damon Horner

hasn’t he only just replaced Shelvey from the considered available first XI? Massive lack of respect is a bit much really.

    • Franzcarrsuperstar

Shelvey is the only change you would make though, right? So one rested player makes it a massive lack of respect?

      • steve

Whether you agree or not Lascelles is Rafa’s first choice and captain.

  • Leicester Mag

Umm rather than recycling dead wood was this not a chance to field one or two U23s?

    • Damon Horner

depends if you’re chasing the title or not I suppose.

      • Leicester Mag

        With Diame and Colback umm

        • Damon Horner

with you on that but usually as a rule they trust experience.

I put a bet on before I saw the bloody team….. aaagh!

Rather Jonjo than Diame, but that`s life

  • MichaelMaximusMoose

According to Sky Jonjo`s not 100%

Wonder what the penalties not awarded league table looks like….

  • Mrkgw

Poor game – better second half hopefully. Cardiff are there for the taking.

  • Jimblag23

Gotta like the guy but my god Mitro is a bad striker at times. (Most times 😬)

    • Geordiegiants

That just about sums him up.

  • hetonmag

Yet again we are presented with a pathetic referee two blatant penalties and a blatant sending off not given.

  • Mrkgw

Happy with that result and deserved in the end. Atsu did well and will have hopefully earned himself a permanent deal. Brilliant away support as always – great to see.

  • Damon Horner

Shout out for Hayden tonight, not only a well drilled goal but the man dominated the middle in most aspects. He hits and misses with the fans but undoubtedly a player who should be given a Premier League opportunity.

Atsu needs to stay. Thats the 3rd important goal hes scored this season. Hayden has to be a first choice in the middle in the prem. He has a rolls royce engine and keeps the pressure on. Watch and learn colback.

Mitro needs some finishing lessons. Hes passionate strong and gets in some good positions. If he had finished half of what he has missed this season we would have bossed this league out of sight.

    • Geordiegiants

If he had scored half of what he missed last season we would of stayed up. He might be a lovely passionate lad, but he is a shight finisher.

Ref rubbish again makes a change

It wasn’t much of a first half, but as dirty as it may not have been pulling a player’s shirt is a penalty all day long. Should have been 1 up at half time. The second half much better and deserved to win the match. They should have buried the two header’s they had from the top of the six yard box, but that is poor finishing on their behalf. Can’t see Brighton losing or even drawing against Bristol City tomorrow, but you never know. Well done Rafa, now to see if fatso has any clue that you back a proper manager or not.
