‘Asked Shola Ameobi if he wanted to come off in 90th minute but said he wanted his hat-trick!’

Shola Ameobi is enjoying life at 35.

Recruited by former teammate Kevin Nolan, the striker is helping Notts County complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes this season.

When Nolan took over in January, the other Magpies looked nailed on for relegation to the National League.

However, some clever signings, including free agent Shola Ameobi, have helped to completely change the complexion of the club.

From relegation near certainties to now being as close to the play-offs (13 points) as they are to relegation, all in under three months.

Saturday some them defeat Colchester 3-1 and Shola grabbed two!

It is nearly seven years since he last scored two goals in a game, a certain 5-1 win for Newcastle over Sunderland on 31 October 2010, when a certain Kevin Nolan got a hat-trick.

Plus, it is also seven years since Shola Ameobi scored in consecutive games – in Newcastle’s last promotion season he scored in a 2-0 win over Forest on 29 March 2010 and then in the 3-2 win at Peterborough on 3 April 2010.

Watch his Saturday goals below, the first a brilliant left foot volley from outside the box, then a smartly taken header to ensure the 3-1 win.

Nottingham Post Match Ratings for yesterday’s Notts County win:

Shola Ameobi:

‘Caused havoc with the Colchester defence who just didn’t know how to handle him. Scored a brilliant goal. 9 (out of 10)’

Kevin Nolan:

“You get that from him (Shola) day in, day out. Now you’re seeing a fit Shola.

“We’ve been able to manage him, keeping him on the training pitch as well as on the pitch on a matchday.

“I did ask him in the 90th minute if he wanted to come off but he said ‘No, I want my hat-trick!’.

“”That just shows what he’s thinking of all the time – it’s first class.”
