Reading 0 Newcastle 0  – Tuesday 7 March 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“The alleged season defining sequence of three away games on the spin is over.

“That’s seven points from a possible nine. More than I thought we’d get. Can’t complain too much.

“We are still well placed. Reading with the second best home record in the division.

“The more negative reaction is that this is a five point lead cut back to three at the top, and nine to third.

“Rafa made some tweaks tonight, with Gamez coming in for Anita and Perez for Diamé. He does that sort of rotation. I had expected Gayle to maybe start the game.

“So we live to go again. Fulham up next back on home turf. We need to throw the kitchen sink at them.

“Elsewhere tonight Leeds let in a late leveller against Fulham at Craven Cottage. It’s a three horse race now.”

Jamie Smith:

“That’ll do.

“Keeps the scoreboard ticking over and 7 from 9 was a dream scenario from these 3 away games.

“We beat our main opponents too, whilst Reading are out of the automatic race.

“4 or 5 wins needed, would be good to start with Fulham on Saturday.”

Toon Bano:

“We would all have taken seven points from these three season defining away games.

“Especially with the two wins being against Brighton and Huddersfield.

“Promotion is very much on track!

“If given the chance I’d have taken 7 from 9 points before the these last three games.

“No big shakes to only get a draw after last two games.

“One game less and a point closer.

“Should Gayle have been on earlier in game?Would it have worked out different – who knows?

“We are still top and plenty work ahead but hopefully enough to see the job through.”

Nat Seaton:

“7 points from 9 away from home against teams in the top 5 – got to be happy with that!

“Not a great game tbh, pretty poor second half but going home quietly content…

“Looking forward to be back at St. James’ on Saturday.”

Jamie Swan

“Good point, great haul for the week.

“Won’t be one for the highlights dvd by any stretch, but only a couple of days after Huddersfield this type of a ‘pig in lipstick and wig’ performance and result was on the cards.

“Aye Brighton and Huddersfield won, so in theory a small backwards step tonight, but personally I’m delighted with our lot.

“After tons of folk pressing the big red panic button and doubting Rafa – we’ve gone and done exactly what the doubters said we couldn’t. Shown tons of bottle and balls of metal.

“Keep it up lads, it’s coming.”

Paul Lyon:

“Think it says a lot that we come away from the game slightly disappointed with a draw against a top six side.

“Thought we played alright, had our chances and defended reasonably well.

“Approaching the three away games I would have been delighted to take 7 points.

“Pleased we kept the unbeaten run going, hoping we can take a lot of positivity into the Fulham game on Saturday!”

four wins from 10 to secure promotion, probably a few more to guarantee the title. still a fantastic position to be in but now the real work must start. Gayle, Shelvey and Clark have historically been shown to be unreliable in the prem and we need to buy improvements upon them if we are to have a comfortable promotion season

    • Whickhamrobbie

wow dissing our best performers this season if they need replacing what about the others ? Diame,Colback,Lascelles they must be proper donkeys

Dont get me wrong, those three can play a strong part next season but we must raise the bar beyond their standard, not pin our hopes on three players who, for all their talent, have faults that suggest relying on them first and last could come back to hurt us.

If our midfield will not tick without the overly-aggressive Shelvey and our goals will not come without Gayle (who lets be honest, should have 30+ goals with the chances he wastes every week) then we are in trouble. Neither will have as easy a time next season and that could have a huge effect on them

I am not saying we should replace them, simply that they should become a part of the squad not the soul of the team

    7 points is not bad
I just expected Benitez to attack ,, for me Reading are not a good side
to give them that much respect and to drop deep and hope for the lucky goal
absolute MUST NOT happen against Fulham on Saturday !!!
We have to attack from minute one ….. HTL

I think Rafa’s been canny with Gayle over the last 2 games as both pitches we’re rubbish, Saturday at home on a decent pitch is the right time to start him, roll on Fulham I hope the lads get that roar of pure passion when they come out and great support all game as they deserve it

  • Leazesl Ender

When we do get promotion, we’ll still be in the second tier of football….

    • Jimblag23

That would make this the third then.

  • Alreet

Very good result after a lon haul week of aways. Rafa did it spot on. Let them have the bal and just sit back. Dont run too far just keep your shape and be organised. Games will start to ease up a little now but we have gayle back and hayden isnt too far off.

Looking forward to what plans are in place for the summer. Could be the biggest in our history after the mass clearout last term. Cannot wait.
