Here is the predicted Newcastle team v Huddersfield that I think Rafa Benitez will choose for today’s match

Friday afternoon saw the United boss confirm Dwight Gayle is in the squad today and I can see him starting.

With so little pace amongst his other options, Rafa felt he had to play Gouffran as the single striker at Brighton. I think Gayle will play as the Manager will be desperate to have that pace AND somebody (not Gouffran who will take any decent chance that presents itself.

Playing that supporting role behind Gayle is a tricky one, as the likes of both Diame and Perez continue to frustrate.

As Tuesday night showed, the Spaniard is maybe more use as an impact sub when the other team are tiring, so that his lack of pace isn’t such a handicap.

I fancy Mohamed Diame to get another chance of showing his classic goal at Brighton was anything but a fluke…

Elsewhere, I see Rafa Benitez going for a more usual team selection and formation, which he has relied on so often.

Difficult to see any change at the back unless he sees a value of bringing in Vurnon Anita for Yedlin, to give United something a little different at right-back.

Similarly, in midfield I believe that despite a decent display and assist for the winner at Brighton, Christian Atsu will find himself back on the bench and Gouffran on the left.

Once again, maybe the only doubt is whether maybe Vurnon Anita could be brought in for Jack Colback, who was one of United’s weakest players at the Amex.

Personally i would start with murphy and bring gayle on if needed and leave atsu on the left instead of guffy

    • Paul Patterson

      Totally agree.

      that`ll do for me

I agree a well but no doubt Rafa will prove us all wrong.

I agree with John, above. What I do wonder about is whether Rafa will stick with Yedlin – who has lots of pace but doesn`t always defend well – or if he`ll recall Big Vurn, who`s a bit more reliable. It depends on Vurn`s general conditioning, I suppose. He mustn`t be properly match fit and it might be a risk to start with him. I like Yedlin and he does try to drive us forward whenever possible ( and we will need pace at the back) but he can go AWOL at times. On the same theme, if Mbemba had been used to some extent this season his pace could have been useful today – either in central defence or midfield – but I don`t expect to see him even on the bench. He must have been a really bad lad somewhere along the line!

    Are you serious……..COLBACK…………..?

Big Vern cant be match fit so that`s a none starter & to bench Atsu in favour of a totally out of form Gouffran would be madness
