Huddersfield 1 Newcastle 3  – Saturday 4 March 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“My word, has Mr Benitez earned his corn this week.

“A seismic result there tonight in Huddersfield.

“A win that was was secured with just 24 per cent possession and six shots on goal, but hey they all count.

“When it’s really mattered, the manager and the players have really pulled it out of the hat. Every single Newcastle fan will know tonight we have one foot in the Premier League.

“A penalty award got us up and running and then Murphy with a clever finish from what appears to be a goalkeeping error.

“A spot-kick to the home side jangled nerves, a softish award really.

“Gayle enters the fray and with them pushing on the high ball has induced the error and he won’t score an easier goal.

“Pre-match build up marred by a statement saying Newcastle fans would not be allowed in any pubs in the town centre after the game. Not sure what to make of that.”

Jamie Smith:

“What a week!

“For so long these fixtures have been pointed out as our likely Achilles heel by the haters, naysayers and mackems (I wonder how many pages they racked up about us on their obsessive message board tonight).

“Instead, our imperious away form has come through again as another set of pretenders were summarily dismissed.

Brighton’s collapse at the City Ground could suggest we’ve knocked their stride a la Norwich. Hopefully the Terriers suffer a similar wobble.

“Another tough prospect at Reading on Tuesday but with an 11 point gap now to third, it seems there’s only one place we’re heading for next season.”

George Stainsby:

“6 (points) from 6 that we would all have said yes please to.

“Another half of soaking up pressure.

“Yes, we’ll need to rebuild next year, no matter what happens.

“But can we enjoy this a bit, please?!!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“My neutral mate called the 3-1, 10 minutes in.

“I was less certain – but a fantastic win of course. The centre-backs were superb again.

“If we win the next two, only an improbable collapse will see us not gain promotion.

“Howay the lads!”

Toon Bano:

“That is one of the best defensive performances away from home that you will ever see.

“That third goal was an absolute classic – can’t stop laughing.

“We won’t miss the refs, as was proven AGAIN with that ridiculous penalty against Shelvey – but we will miss scoring goals like that.

“Bye bye Championship.”

Paul Patterson:

“Proof that stats mean nothing.

“Missions one and two completed.

“Onto the third we go.”

Nat Seaton:

“Maybe a bit lucky pen to get us on our way but after that, thought it was a great away team performance.

“Confidence seems to have returned and can’t wait to go to Reading on Tuesday.

“11 point gap to third, starting to get a bit excited!!!”

Jamie Swan

“Thou shalt not PASS!

“Unbelievable result and determination. Had a game plan and it worked.

“Was a tough watch and Town had so much of the ball that it always felt like something would give.

“Apart from Shelvey giving away the penalty, nothing did.

“I think that Huddersfield are a very decent team, better than most we’ve played in my opinion – so delighted to get revenge for the home loss.

“One step closer – enjoy tonight!”

Ben Cooper:

“Great result, that is the bottom line.

“In the second half we were far too deep and I was impressed by the way Huddersfield played – but they had little up front and once we had gone 2-0 up I knew we would win.

“Even after we had gifted them a goal, probably one penalty each that might not have been given, i still didnt think they would score again.

“The moment of the match for me was with 10 minutes to go, exchange of passes between Ritchie and Dummett, get a decent ball in, Dummett puts it in the stand. Brilliant. At least he defended well.

“Again, Lascelles and Clark were massive today. Bring on Reading.”

Huddersfield were reduced to long range shots and diving around for set plays. Great defensive performance. Some ironic cheers whilst there defenders passed the ball around their back four would have been amusing.

  • Scottpaige

Great game management by Mr Benitez

  • Hopey

Diame was my MOTM never stopped working and was a thorn in their side all night, I wish fans would stop putting him down, they haven’t got a clue as far as I am concerned

    • Harry Gibson

Mohamed is just not up to it sorry.

    • Wor Lass

Spot on, m8! He put in a shift-and-a-half last night.

  • Grahame Johnson

Diame fits in perfect at away games he is a pest and runs all game, Murphy and him stopped town playing their usual game. The last ten games results are amazing considering how many players usually rate under 6. Passion pride commitment and a squad who care, that’s a Newcastle United I’m proud of

Premier league performance from the team and a win on Tuesday should virtually guarantee promotion. Was getting a bit worried after some of our recent performances but that’s now in the past as the whole team will be on a high and giving their all until the end of the season. Thanks Rafa. You’re back on the xmas card list again.

  • Steve Smith

I think the only time they got into our box all game was when they won the penalty. Rafa’s game plan was spot on.

Hats off to them for not rolling over though. It won’t surprise me in the slightest if they take second place from Brighton. The occasion didn’t get to them at all.

  • Harry Gibson

It’s funny to read a few people’s comments on here now, I see a lot of comments end with the slogan.
“In Rafa we trust” I wish everyone had had this mentality in the tough times as well as the good.
I’m going to change mine to “in Rafa I have always trusted, even in the tough times when he has made mistakes”.

  • Wor Lass

It`s good to see some people appreciating that forward players can be important defenders when the manager sets a team up to soak up pressure and “manage” the game. In my opinion, Diame was superb last night and was a definite contender, with Darlow, Lascelles, Clark and Ritchie, for MoM. He didn`t stop running and countless times he got a foot in to disrupt their play and force them on to the back foot. That`s why Rafa chooses players like him, Ritchie, Vurn, Dummy, Clark, Gouf and Lascelles so regularly – he can trust them to carry out the plan for the good of the team without worrying about their egos.

  • Leazesl Ender

It’ll be heartbreaking when Rafa leaves in the summer….

    • It’s bobbi fleckman

I thought you didn’t rate Rafa anyway?

      • Leazesl Ender

I rate Rafa you fool….. the problem is Ashley….. Ashleys dont change their warts…. here piggy piggy….

        • It’s bobbi fleckman

So when you poo poo’s Rafa’s genius as just throwing people behind the ball and counter attacking, you were actually supporting him? You have a funny way of showing support but Sunderland fans are like that.

          • Wor Monga

Don’t waste your time on him, Bobby…he’s a closet Mackem, and he’s just green with envy!!!

          • Leazesl Ender

Go do a wheelie fuzzy brain

          • Wor Monga

Eh!…”go do a wheelie fuzzy brain”…it’s probably time for you to come off the medication, sunshine…or else try smoking something a bit less whackee!!!

          • It’s bobbi fleckman

            the guy’s a simpleton

          • Leazesl Ender

            That’s the tactic employed….

  • Andrew Cowley

Great performance, perfect away win.huddersfield only had long shots which Darlow was comfortable enough with.thought Ritchie was best, colback had a decent game,no passengers everyone worked really hard.murphy is proving to be a great signing.great week.

Haven’t seen his name mentioned below so I will put in a mention for Dummett. Once again we have played a serious challenger on their home turf and once again there have hardly been a single cross or chance created down their right wing. Now that doesn’t happen by chance it happens because our left back is obviously a better defender than he is given credit for. Knockeart is arguably the best player in this league but he did very little against us and ended up getting subbed. I’ve seen him win games on his own this season. Well done Dummett!
