Wolves fans react to defeat by Newcastle – Very interesting comments
Not sure exactly what I was expecting from Wolves fans after Saturday’s win.
Thought there would obviously be patter about hard luck stories and Mitrovic should have gone etc etc but to be honest it was surprisingly minimal.
There was more stick for their own manager, with seemingly a feeling that Paul Lambert hadn’t been adventurous enough.
On the other hand, the Wolves fans are overwhelmingly positive about Rafa Benitez, believing he got his tactics absolutely right and ‘did a job’ on Wolves.
Maybe the main worry if you are a Newcastle supporter is how rubbish/average the home fans thought the Magpies were, with only the Rafa factor making the difference.
Also surprising to see Jonjo Shelvey hardly rate a mention.
Comments from Wolves fans via their excellent Molineux Mix message board:
‘The stats suggested we did enough to at least warrant a point, but we just offered very little going forward.
Newcastle carried out a controlled away performance, and did exactly what they needed to; particularly as the pace at the top between them and Brighton seems relentless.
Suspected a 1-0 loss before kick off but was convinced it would be Shelvey back to haunt us. Once Mitrovic should have walked, it was probably inevitable he was to score.
I don’t think we played particularly badly but we just need to make more of our possession.
Was rather telling towards the final 5 minutes where Costa was out on the right-wing and had three Newcastle players closing him down on several occasions.’
‘Played ok in the 1st half but toothless up front, 2nd half they managed the game well & we ran out of ideas.’
‘Newcastle played us well, but I think Lambert’s tactics were at fault. It felt much more of a 4-4-1-1 than a 4-2-3-1, which left Weimann and Costa too deep and they were ineffective as a result.
I don’t think we deserved to lose, but we also didn’t look like scoring, so we can’t complain too much. Lascelles was majestic, too, in fairness.’
‘Rafa did a job on us, knows we are only effective on the break and had his team sit deep and knew our defence would give them at least one clear goalscoring opportunity and they took it.’
‘Before the complete injustice that was Newcastles first goal, I have to say I thought the team played fairly well.
They nullified the threat of Newcastles attack, and retained position in all the areas of the pitch, which is something we are not used to seeing at Molinuex, especially against the league leaders bear in mind.
The second half admittedly was not so good and Newcastle did very well to kill off the game.’
‘We were the better side and conceded a goal to a player who should have been sent off twice from a free kick that wasn’t a foul.
Our support was **** today as well. 24k for a Saturday game against Newcastle is pathetic. The Steve Bull was full of one game wonders who sat there on their phones most of the time taking selfies while pulling duck faces.
The Geordies mugged us today on and off the pitch.’
‘Absolute garbage game where Newcastle were no better.’
‘Think Rafa did his homework on us and any ounce of attacking nous was completely blunted.’
‘Newcastle’s MOTM was Pawson. Generally he was ok but his poor decisions changed the game. Mitrovic should have been yellow carded for his forearm smash on Batth and definite second yellow on Ikeme. Also missed a definite penalty for handball.
Given it was always likely to be tight these decisions changed the course of the game.’
‘I thought we played well and were the better team, decisions again did’nt go our way, and cost us.’
‘Newcastle were better than us.
They defended as a team very well, they were stronger than us all over the pitch
Dave Edwards nearly scored but again their attackers were stronger, Mitrovic should have been sent off but the ref bottled loads of decisions.
The Geordies deserved the three points.’
‘Toon did sweet FA to win that match except that they scored a jammy goal and offered no other threat.’
‘I really don’t think we deserved anything from the game. You could make the same case for Newcastle though, who for a team top of the table, showed a stark lack of quality.’
‘I thought the Geordies were awful. They had no creativity whatsoever, but we didn’t do enough to break them down and never really looked like equalising. A 0-0 draw would have been fair.’
‘QPR outplayed them at St James Park the other week. They aren’t playing well. They were there for the taking today.’
‘Poor game all round. Newcastle came for a point but ended up with all three from a scrappy offside goal, scored by a player that shouldn’t have been on the pitch.’
‘Newcastle did a job on us. Best team in the league. No more needs to be said.’
‘Newcastle turned up, got the goal and saw the game out very comfortably. It was a promotion performance from them.’
‘I love to praise our fans, but yesterday “we” just were not at the races. It doesn’t mean any given individual on here wasn’t shouting their head off, but collectively it was poor.
Geordies were superb, hats off to them. Hard to believe its the same fan base as was at St James Park.’
‘In the end balls into the box were just as ineffective and easy for Darlow..
We didn’t look like scoring but Newcastle are a very strong side and I feel if let at us would have caused us problems.
I’m afraid it was superb tactics and application by Rafa. Our danger man is Costa and he was given little space.’
‘I thought we were on the offensive most of the match and Newcastle are similar to Brighton in that they aren’t flamboyant but manage games / defend very well.’
‘The main worry from the game was that Newcastle totally nullified our tactics. They sat deep and we couldn’t break. Game over.
Lambert needs to find an alternative tactical approach as yesterday when it was obvious they’d worked us out he had nothing to offer. Very worrying if other teams sit back.
Also his comments after the game were a joke.’
‘That was so frustrating. Lost a game we should’ve drawn.
Newcastle came for a point really, and in classic Wolves style we gave them all three.
Have to say though, they’re by far the best defensive side I’ve seen in our division. The wingers were disciplined, everyone knew their role, Costa had two or three on him at all times and ultimately we couldn’t break them down.
Mitrovic HAD to go. Should’ve been booked for the first one, actually did nothing for the one he was booked for, then studded Ikeme.
Imagine if he did that to an outfield player? Missed the ball and catches opponent with studs. A second yellow all day long.
The goal was another unforgivable error. Lascelles in the interview admitted he did the fancy flick because he knew he was offside!!! Basic and awful from that linesman.
We didn’t deserve to lose but we didn’t do anywhere near enough to salvage a draw.’
‘I took my stepson (Newcastle fanatic) yesterday and he thought Newcastle were really poor. I thought they were solid and difficult to beat.
If they get promoted they need to buy big time.’
‘Point to make about Newcastle’s game management.
If we’d gone 1-0 up I don’t think we’d have been able to see the game out as well as they did (albeit that they could have conceded a penalty on a couple of occasions). We need to learn from that.
Their fouls were clever, their defence was excellent, their goalkeeper was commanding, their time-wasting was subtle.’
‘Apparently Newcastle have only conceded 8 goals away from home all season.
You can see why.
Promotion built on a solid defence.’
‘I liked Yedlin, very quick, made good runs and can go on the outside of a man, best full back on the pitch.’
