John Carver sacked after fan revolt – Reports
The media in Cyprus are reporting that John Carver has been sacked.
The Cyprus Mail say that widespread media reports on the island claim that Omonia Nicosia have let the former Newcastle boss go.
No official confirmation from the club but the Cypriot media say that former player Akis Ioakim will take charge of Saturday’s home game against AEL.
The final straw is claimed to be Wednesday’s cup exit to Apollon, the Omonia fans demanding that John Carver be sacked and throwing flares and firecrackers onto the pitch, leading to the game being abandoned.
The Cyprus Mail:
‘Omonia coach John Carver has been fired by the Nicosia giants, according to widespread media reports.
The Englishman, appointed in June 2016, was already under pressure after falling a massive 12 points behind leaders and arch-rivals Apoel in the Cyprus championship this season.
The last straw was Wednesday’s humiliating exit from the Cyprus Cup quarter-finals against Apollon, where the referee abandoned the game following crowd trouble from Greens fans, who threw firecrackers and flares onto the pitch and called for Carver’s dismissal.
More departures in Omonia’s backroom staff are expected in the coming days
Former Omonia player Akis Ioakim is expected to take charge of the team against AEL this weekend.’
