Rafa Benitez described it as ‘incredible’, the fact that Newcastle had lost once again against Blackburn.
A look at the stats below show that Newcastle had five times as many shots, twice as much possession, six times as may corners…as well as the fact that Blackburn scored with their only shot on target.
Newcastle fans will tend to agree that United’s dominance should have equalled a win, especially with the way they controlled the first half.
However, not sure that many will agree with Rafa Benitez when he says ‘The only positive is that we played against a good team’.
The fact that Newcastle have gifted Blackburn six points out of six, exactly a quarter of their entire total, and yet they are still in the relegation zone tonight – tells you everything.
Rafa Benitez believes that Newcastle lost control for around five minutes of the second half and that cost them the game – but to be honest, as the second half went on Newcastle were looking less and less likely to score.
Time to reflect and look at the January ‘bargains’.
“The only positive is that we played against a good team, who worked very hard.
“For me, to see the team playing so well and not winning the game is difficult to understand but we have to carry on trying to play in the same way, trying to create as many chances as today and trying to take our chances.
“We lost, maybe for five minutes, control of the game and conceded the goal.
“They put a lot of bodies in the box and it’s not easy to find space – but it’s difficult to explain.
“How can you not even draw….and lose this game? It’s incredible.
“The only thing we didn’t do is to score when we had a lot of chances, especially in the first half.
“If we continue playing like this, we will win games.”
