Norwich in talks to sign Newcastle target Mitchell Dijks

News from Holland this morning that Norwich are in talks to sign Mitchell Dijks, a player that Newcastle have watched for some time.

The 23 year old defender plays left-back but can also appear at centre-back, at 6ft 4 he is seen as a good fit for the physical demands of English football.

De Telegraaf said early last year that Newcastle had made a ‘tentative’ approach for the player in January, with the club desperately looking for defenders to try and stave off relegation, but then no deal was pushed through.

That was followed by further reports in Holland that Newcastle had continued to watch Dijks for Ajax, as his impressive club form led to a call up for the national squad.

However, now it is the Canaries who appear set to bring the defender to the Championship, Mitchell Dijks has been relegated to the bench and only made two league starts for Ajax since September.

De Telegraaf say that Ajax have confirmed that they are negotiating with Norwich to agree a fee.

The player had an interesting start to his career.

Making a handful of appearances for Ajax after coming through the ranks, as well as spending time at Heerenveen on loan, in summer of 2014 Dijks was allowed to leave on a free transfer to Willem ll.

However, after impressing there, Ajax then bought him back for 1m euros only a year later.
