Newcastle United are looking to sign Fulham’s star player, Tom Cairney, according to reports.

The club’s official media partner, The Mirror, say that their information is that Rafa Bentez is looking to bring in the attacking midfielder who turns 26 this month.

United are being linked with a number of players who can add goals and assists from midfield, both established Premier League players on loan and younger Championship players with proven records in the division.

Tom Cairney was the player who delivered the corner on the opening day of the season that Fulham scored from, beating Newcastle 1-0.

In total he has five goals and three assists this season, which follows an impressive eight goals and six assists last season.

To give that some kind of perspective, Newcastle’s list of players when it comes to goals and assists in the past two seasons (for Newcastle and previous teams) are (first figures goals and assists so far this season, second lot of figures goals and assists in 2015/16):

Shelvey: 3+6 and 1+5

Colback: 0+0 and 1+1

Hayden: 1+2 and 1+0

Diame: 2+2 and 10+4

Atsu: 3+0 and 2+0

Perez: 3+2 and 6+2

Gouffran: 4+3 and 0+0

Ritchie: 4+6 and 4+6

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has already made his feelings known about the speculation:

“Tom Cairney is so important to us. He makes us tick and he shows he can do damage to teams.

“I’m going to guarantee he’s going to stay with us.”

As always though, you only find out what happens once the money is put on the table.

Rafa Benitez stated before Saturday’s match that targets had been approached but not landed as yet, interesting to see if that changes before Brentford on Saturday.
