Ian Cathro is set to make former Newcastle star Aaron Hughes his first signing at Hearts.
The Scottish media (Daily Record and Scotsman) have confirmed that Hughes has been offered a contract until the end of the season, with the possibility of negotiating a longer deal which would continue into next season.
The 37 year old is a model professional and was one of Graeme Souness’ many disastrous mistakes.
Serving Newcastle especially well under Sir Bobby Robson, the versatile player turned out at centre-back and both full-back positions.
Souness sold Aaron Hughes for only £1m to Aston Villa and Newcastle spent a fortune in the ensuing years on various defensive replacements, meanwhile Hughes ended up having a 17 season career in the Premier League before eventually playing Championship football.
Later playing in Australia, Aaron Hughes has just finished a stint in the Indian Super League with Kerala Blasters, as well as last year passing 100 caps for Northern Ireland and appearing in the 2016 Euros.
The wholehearted defender is now a free agent and Ian Cathro is said to see Hughes’ experience and leadership as potentially a massive help as he looks to get Hearts on an upward trajectory in his first ever management post.
