Dwight Gayle puts Newcastle ahead v Brentford but nightmare as star striker forced off injured

It has been an eventful season and a very eventful afternoon for Dwight Gayle.

The striker was one of eight changes as Rafa Benitez reverted back to a more recognisable line-up for the trip to Brentford.

A bright opening by Newcastle saw Dwight Gayle at the heart of the action and after going close on a few occasions, the Magpies went in front on the 20 minute mark.

The United number nine scoring with an excellent left foot effort from a tight angle.

Then disaster struck only two minutes later, Dwight Gayle forced off with an injury.

Difficult to tell what it is but he was holding his knee at one point – though he did walk off the pitch so everything crossed that it was just a precaution.

Daryl Murphy replaced the Newcastle striker and the injury/change appeared to set Newcastle back far more than it should.

After being the dominant team, suddenly it was Brentford getting on top and Karl Darlow has made a couple of excellent saves to keep United ahead at the break.

Elsewhere, Brighton went behind in the 13th minute to a goal from former Newcastle defender Paul Huntington and trail at half-time.

Definitely a day when you could do with blowing the final whistles now!

Newcastle United:

Darlow, Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Hayden, Colback, Ritchie, Perez, Gouffran, Gayle (Murphy 28)

Subs:

Sels, Hanley, Anita, Lazaar, Sterry, Ameobi
