DeAndre Yedlin “When I was super young we didn’t really know a lot about the FA Cup…”
DeAndre Yedlin has been sharing right-back duties with Vurnon Anita this season but after the Dutchman was carried off at Brentford, the way is now open for the USA international to make the position his own.
The news this morning was that Anita is set to be out for at least two months, though better news on Hayden (could be back for Rotherham on Saturday) and Dwight Gayle (expected to be out for 2-3 weeks).
DeAndre Yedlin has started 10 and came off the bench in another four of Newcastle’s Championship matches, as well as featuring in four of the cup games this season.
Despite the demands that injuries and international duty have now put on the Newcastle squad, DeAndre Yedlin is swimming against the flow and claims that it is actually ‘a good time’ to be playing this FA Cup replay with Birmingham on Wednesday night.
The former Sunderland player says that ‘the depth of the squad’ is what makes Newcastle so strong this season but that is going to be really tested in the next few weeks. Wednesday night in particular will be an interesting test and team/bench selection, with Rafa pulling six reserve players out of last night’s match at Swansea to potentially be part of the 18 man squad that takes on Birmingham.
As for the FA Cup itself, DeAndre Yedlin says that obviously he knows now how important the competition is….but that wasn’t the case when he was growing up in the United States.
The Newcastle defender saying that he and his other friends who were interested in football ‘didn’t really know about the FA Cup’ when they were ‘super young’.
As a sign of the times, even a number of years ago, I bet at the same time DeAndre Yedlin would have known all about the Champions League, with that becoming dominant alongside the domestic leagues.
DeAndre Yedlin talking to NUFC TV:
“I think it’s a good time for the game (cup replay v Birmingham) to come, especially coming after a hard fought win.
“We are going to be at home in front of our fans and hopefully get through to the next round.”
‘Another three injuries (Hayden, Anita, Gayle)?’
“I think that’s what makes this team so strong, is the depth of the squad. This is why we have all the players that we do, to fill in four times like this.
“I’m sure everybody who gets the opportunity to play will do great.
“Every competition you are in, you want to do the best you can. So if we can make a run in this cup, it will be great.
“When I was super young we didn’t really know a lot about the FA Cup but obviously I know the importance of it now.
“Every time we are in front of the fans though, we want to win and make them happy.”
‘Vurnon Anita carried off at Brentford, I know he’s your friend but…maybe a chance to establish yourself?’
“Of course. I never want to see any of my teammates injured, or anybody for that matter, but like you say, it is an opportunity but…I hope he gets back as quick as possible because he is an important part of the squad.”
‘Jonjo Shelvey back?’
“Great news. Jonjo Shelvey is one of the key guys on our team, to have him back will be huge.”
