Christian Atsu responds to transfer to Turkey claims – Reports

On Thursday we saw surprise claims in the Turkish media that Chelsea were in negotiation to transfer Christian Atsu to Basaksehir.

The winger is on loan at Newcastle for the season but the reports said that a deal was well underway towards completion, with it believed to be a permanent transfer.

The actual details of the Christian Atsu loan contract weren’t made public back in August, it was simply stated that Newcastle had an option to buy Christian Atsu at the end of the season. You would presume if there was any truth to the claims in Turkey, that Newcastle would have to give permission to let the player move midway through his loan.

Basaksehir finished fourth last season, a distant 20 points off the top, but this season they are the surprise league leaders just one match off the halfway point of the season and looking to strengthen their squad.

They are desperate to bring in quality players to try and keep the momentum of their title challenge going, as well as ensure the riches of Champions League football next season.

Christian Atsu is currently away on international duty and has spoken of his worries regarding the timing of the African Cup of Nations finals affecting his club chances this season, when returning to Newcastle.

A regular Championship substitute (10 times) this season, Atsu has only started six league games, and the winger has admitted to being sick of these temporary loan moves since joining Chelsea and is desperate for a permanent base. Now 25 years old, Newcastle is Christian Atsu’s fifth loan move in the past three and a half years.

However, Friday has brought an update from Ghanasoccernet.com, who say they have talked to close associates of Christian Atsu and he is said to have zero interest in moving to Turkey.

Instead, the usually reliable Ghanaian website says that Christian Atsu is really ‘enjoying his life at Newcastle United‘ and is determined to ‘progress at the club’ not elsewhere.

They add that their source had told them, if the worst happened and a permanent move to Newcastle didn’t work out, the winger is determined to ‘stay in the top leagues of Europe’, which clearly doesn’t include Turkey in Atsu’s eyes.

Ghanasoccernet.com quoting associates of the Newcastle winger:

“Christian Atsu has no plans of leaving England at the moment.

“He has no interest in joining any team in Turkey.

“He is enjoying his life at Newcastle United  at the moment and wants to continue with his progress at the club.

“In the worse case scenario, he will stay in the top leagues of Europe.”
