Blackburn 1 Newcastle 0  –  Monday 2 January 2017 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Scott:

“Can’t say anything but utterly disappointed.”

Paul Lyon:

“Took the nephew to his first away game today.

“Blackburn away was my first and the result funnily enough was also a 1 nil defeat.

“What is it about Blackburn? We struggle to get a result against them. The gits!

“We didn’t make the most of our possession and got punished for it. There was an inevitability about that free kick.

“Despite the deflating result I’m still confident we’ll get promoted.”

Paul Patterson:

“Absolutely disgusting. Can’t beat a side we have pummelled for 75 minutes.

“And where the hell was Mitrovic in the last 10 minutes?

“Tactics need looking at after this stupidity and shooting practice tomorrow morning.”

Nat Seaton:

“A hard to take smash and grab!

“Having said that, it was a self-inflicted defeat and a really disappointing second half performance.

“My concerns from the last few weeks have not been allayed with that display.

“Promotion is not going to be a given, that is for sure.”

Ben Cooper:

“Apart from all the very, very obvious things about this game…when they started to get control after 70 minutes we did nothing about it, which was very disappointing.

“That is all i have to say really, except that Matt Ritchie may have a magic hat but his boots are made of something quite different.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“A hugely damaging day for the automatic promotion hopes.

“I’ve always had Blackburn down as a bogey side and today proved it.

“A club on its knees amid bitter acrimony between fans and owner, has done the double over us.

“Dominance wasted and it has proved very costly, with results elsewhere going against us.

“Colback giving away the free kick for the goal.

“Seven defeats is a lot for a club with promotion aspirations.

“The focus for now has to be on new recruits and getting a grip back on second place. Brighton look streets ahead of us.”

Jamie Smith:

Stiflingly frustrating.

“Sometimes these results are likely to turn up in the Championship but to be doubled by such a poor side is really galling.

“The unstoppable form of Brighton makes things look worse and worse but the late Reading turnaround is, for me, far more worrying as they close the gap yet again.

“It’s over to Rafa to reinvigorate this in the transfer window.”

Kevin Christie:

“Not a terrible performance but a shockingly poor result.

“Colback a complete liability. Him and Hayden in centre doesn’t work – offer no creativity, heads tend to drop if things start to go against us. No leadership, which we badly need.

“Feel like a broken record now after every defeat but the solution seems obvious to everyone bar Rafa.

“Mitro/ Murphy up top with Gayle. Use Yedlin and Atsu more often. Attack from wings. Baffling and infuriating that Rafa can’t see it.

“Despite Diame’s poor form, worried about him being gone now. Perez so ineffective it’s laughable. Atsu will also be a big miss.

“Need two key signings this month to avoid catastrophe. Creativity in midfield a must and a top striker wouldn’t go amiss either. Fingers crossed!”

Toon Bano:

“Why does Diame play 90 minutes when he has no impact on the game and we have another striker sat on the bench?

“Rafa needs to learn quick how to win in the Championship.

“Every game we have lost this season, Forest apart, has been completely down to Rafa’s lack of ambition and bravery to break a team down.

“Always lose without scoring.”

Jamie Swan

“Sick!

“Sick that we had two goals disallowed, hit the bar and possibly should have had a penalty.

“Sick that we had the ball for 90 minutes but in truth did nowt with it.

“Sick of Colback offering nothing but a yellow card and a guaranteed numb nut free kick. Bearing in mind that minus that stupid free kick we had nothing to defend at all. SICK!

“Unfortunately, for all the heart and hard graft, Jack and Isaac make for an extremely flat midfield partnership. It doesn’t work and hasn’t looked good in any of the last three.

“In fact this game has made me sick to the gills, full stop.  Really hard to take and this sort of result gives me the jeepers.

“God speed Shelvey back.
