2 Newcastle players feature in Championship’s Top 10 dirtiest

A list of the Championship’s dirtiest has been released and two Newcastle players feature in the top ten.

The stats relate to how many fouls have been committed so far this season and the NUFC players feature in sixth and tenth places.

Maybe the biggest surprise in the list is how many strikers feature, as you’d normally assume it to be central midfielders to monopolise it, having to make challenges continuously throughout the game.

Interesting to see that it is Brighton’s Glenn Murray who is way out in the lead with 57 fouls, 11 clear of Blackburn’s Sam Gallagher.

Murray was sent off on Friday during Brighton’s win over Sheffield Wednesday and hopefully his absence tonight will cost the south coast team.

Murray is second top scorer in the Championship with 16 goals and serves a one match suspension this Tuesday night, Brighton at home to Cardiff.

Championship players to commit the most fouls this season, as compiled by the Express:

57 Glenn Murray (Brighton)

46 Sam Gallagher (Blackburn)

45 Will Hughes (Derby)

45 Jordan Hugill (Preston)

44 David Davis (Birmingham)

43 Mohamed Diame (Newcastle United)

39 Fernando Forestieri (Sheff Wed)

38 Aron Gunnarsson (Cardiff)

38 Marley Watkins (Barnsley)

37 Isaac Hayden (Newcastle United)

Isaac Hayden isn’t the biggest surprise but Mohamed Diame in at number six possibly is.

However, a (positive) feature of Diame’s game is that he does track back for Newcastle and often breaks up attacks by putting his foot in, though regularly at the expense of a free-kick in non-threatening areas.
