Wigan 0 Newcastle 2  –  Wednesday 14 December 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Nat Seaton:

“Scrappy game to be honest but hey, another 3 points and another clean sheet away from home.

“Good to see an improving Diame putting in a man of the match performance.

“Travelling back very happy indeed and looking forward to the trip to Burton on Saturday…”

Scott:

“Another solid win. Normal service resumed and back to the top.

“Long way to go but looking good for rest of season.

“League table will look better this Christmas than last. Long may it continue.

“Many thanks Rafa.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“Having been on the work Xmas do this is more a reaction to the outcome, but from what I’ve seen there was quite a party at the DW Stadium.

“It’s been a bogey venue over the years but not tonight. Not with our manager.

“ So three more points banked, back to the top and it is on to Burton.

“Nine points clear of third is a nice feeling for the fans. Bring on Burton. Xmas number one beckons.

“Random point to finish here: some bloke called Steve McClaren is doing a hell of a job at Derby County.”

George Stainsby:

“I know Wigan have struggled a bit…but we won away at Wigan! Gerrin!”

Ben Cooper:

“Playing in front of all of those empty seats with the opposition in an inter sport kit, it was like playing at Eldon Square in 1986.

“The opposition at Eldon Square were probably better than Wigan as well.

“Apart from getting 30 minutes kip at the start of the second-half it was reasonably comfortable.

“Excellent couple of centre-half performances again, along with Hayden who is playing well at the minute, it only took a couple of class moves to finish the game.

“It should have been easier than it looked tho.”

Kevin Christie:

“Solid if uninspiring.

“Great goal from Diame.

“Clark and Lascelles commanding and dependable again.

“Lacked width and penetration from full-backs – would have liked to see Lazaar on as soon as Atsu scored.

“Anita and Dummy together is too flat and defensive. Need at least one of Lazaar/ Yedlin to start – especially when Shelvey is suspended.

“Anyway, another three points. Onwards we march!”

Paul Lyon:

“All about the result this evening.

“Scored when we had to, dug in when we had to and come away with three points, which stretches our gap between us & third place.

“Textbook away win at a place that hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for us in recent history (pint at the Soccerdome pub anyone?).

Job done, content.”

Toon Bano:

“Nice and easy day at the office.

“Championship standard is pretty dire.

“Though we tried our best to make a game of it second-half.

“Bring on Burton Albion…”

Jamie Swan

“Two goals, clean sheet, three points and back on the roof of the Championship grotto.

“However, despite the cheer it wasn’t exactly a vintage show tonight. Hash tag “understatement”.

“ It didn’t need to be though, which is the regular theme in this division. But at times we were sloppier than a St Bernard’s bib at the back.

“Not going to dwell on our deficiencies at full-back, poor service to Gayle, or lack of threat from Ritchie. Seems like a waste of breath after a win, but Rafa’s not daft.

“I said before the game that I’d take one nil, as it’s been a bloody graveyard for us down there and I’ve had some truly grim visits.

“ It had that ‘Rotherham’ feel to me and we nearly got an identical performance and result. Thank God for little Atsu to peel me down from the ceiling with a second.

“The chances are that come the end of the season, who is going to give a flying fig? Not me, but if we are going to have a more comfortable ride to the finish line we need to squeeze a few drops more.

“Great to see big Mo cap some form with a goal that reminded me of a sixth former storming a Primary school yard, pure beast.

“Upwards and onwards.”
