Two more St James Park sellouts confirmed – 613,469 watch Newcastle before New Year
Quite remarkable, St James Park will have seen 613,469 fans walk through the turnstiles in Championship matches before we celebrate the new year.
Newcastle United confirmed earlier this week that the Sheffield Wednesday match on Boxing Day had sold out, despite being moved for live TV to the night, which means no trains and minimal (if any) bus services to get fans home.
Then on Wednesday, the club have now revealed that the Nottingham Forest game is now also sold out, despite this one also inconveniencing supporters by moving to the Friday night (30 December) so supporters wouldn’t create extra congestion with a new year’s eve parade heading through the city centre (what a joke!).
After the Forest game there there will have been 12 home Championship matches and with these final two sold out, I have assumed that the attendance at each will be at least as high as our highest one (52,145***) so far, which was the Birmingham game on Saturday.
This would give a total of (at least) 613,469 for Championship games at St James Park at an average of (at least) 51,122 for these first dozen matches…it’s mad!
