Two Newcastle players named in Senegal squad for African Cup of Nations
Leaving it late, Senegal have now named their squad for the African Cup of Nations.
The tournament running from the 14 January to 5 February 2017.
Mohamed Diame has been included by Senegal as expected, whilst another Newcastle midfielder, Henri Saivet, is also named in the squad.
Saivet currently on a season-long loan at St Etienne in Ligue 1. However, no sign of Cheick Tiote in the Senegal squad.
Competition rules state that players must be made available to their countries 14 days before the tournament starts and Friday lunchtime brought news that Newcastle have asked Ghana if they can delay Christian Atsu joining the squad, to allow him to be available against Blackburn on Monday.
The expectation being that Newcastle will also ask the same for Diame, as well as Chancel Mbemba (DR Congo).
Senegal’s group matches are:
15 January 2017 – Senegal v Tunisia
19 January 2017 – Senegal v Zimbabwe
23 January 2017 – Senegal v Algeria
