Transfer approach made for Cheick Tiote

Cheick Tiote could yet be on the move.

Monday afternoon has seen confirmation that Sporting Gijon have contacted the Newcastle midfielder’s agents.

The Chronicle says that their information is that the La Liga side have made an approach to find out what the player’s demands would be, if he is to be tempted away from St James Park.

With Cheick Tiote seemingly perfectly happy to pick up his lucrative wage packet at Newcastle without playing any football, it is maybe a but unlikely that minnows Sporting Gijon will be able to satisfy the former Ivory Coast international.

Moves to both China and Turkey have already broken down reportedly due to excessive wage demands, so difficult to see the Spanish club succeeding, especially when the Chronicle says that he will only move if offered a long contract.

Cheick Tiote turns 31 before his Newcastle contract ends in June and Sporting Gijon are currently fighting relegation in third bottom place, with only 12 points from 16 matches.

With a real risk of relegation and Spanish football finances so dire in the second tier, it looks all but impossible for Sporting Gijon to give Tiote a lucrative long-term deal.

Newcastle United are reported to be happy to let the player go for nothing to get him off the wage bill, with Rafa Benitez freezing him out of his plans this season.
