Tom Lees “The atmosphere at Newcastle is totally different now”

Tom Lees thinks that Sheffield Wednesday will need to keep a clean sheet if they are to get anything tonight.

The last occasion the two teams met, a single goal was all that the Owls needed to win.

That game was 15 months ago and yet another embarrassment under Steve McClaren’s ‘leadership’, Sheffield Wednesday made 10 changes and yet still beat Newcastle with a goal on 76 minutes, this despite Newcastle putting out this really strong team, at least on paper that is…

Krul, Janmaat, Lascelles, Williamson, Mbemba, Anita, Wijnaldum, Thauvin, Sissoko, Obertan, De Jong

As it happens, Tom Lees was the only first teamer that played against Newcastle last September in that League Cup defeat at St James Park. Looking ahead to this Championship game, the Wednesday defender  says that ‘The atmosphere at Newcastle is totally different now’ with Newcastle ‘flying’.

That League Cup loss in September 2015 came on the back of three successive Premier League defeats to Arsenal, West Ham and Watford – that last loss was at St James Park and maybe the point when fans began to fear the worst, with only two points from the first 18.

Tom Lees foresees very few chances coming the visitors’ way and thinks they ‘will have to be at our best’ to get any point(s) from the match.

Tom Lees:

“Newcastle will be very tough – they are up there for a reason.

“They have a lot of good players so we will have to be at our best to get anything from the game.

“Probably every team in the division who plays Newcastle go in as underdogs but we don’t mind that. We’ve had some good results away from home this season and maybe not got what we deserved sometimes. We are looking to do the same again and get a better result.

“The atmosphere at Newcastle is totally different now. When we last went there, it was a really bad atmosphere but now they are flying so we will be facing a much different opponent.

“We have to keep a clean sheet…Newcastle don’t give much away so when we get our chances we are going to have to be really efficient.

“We are not going to get chances by the bucketload like we have had in other games. We might only get one or two so we have got to be efficient and be solid defensively.”
