Sky Sports pundit picks 2 players to watch out for in Newcastle’s next away match
Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes that when we get to Wigan v Newcastle next Wednesday, the most important two players will be in direct competition.
The broadcaster are currently promoting their 10 EFL live matches in 10 days, which kicks off tomorrow (Friday) night with Brighton v Leeds.
A win for Chris Hughton’s team would see them, at least temporarily, move above Newcastle to the top of the table – before NUFC take on Birmingham this Saturday.
It is though Newcastle’s turn on Sky Sports on Wed 14 December, when they travel to relegation threatened Wigan.
They may be second bottom and have scored the fewest (16) goals in the Championship – but they have only conceded 21 in 19 league games, Newcastle one of only six clubs to leak less goals.
A big reason for that is Jussi Jaaskelainen, the keeper spent 15 years at Bolton then three at West Ham, before moving on to Wigan in summer 2015.
Even at the age of 41 he is showing great form and David Prutton is fancying that his duel with the Championship’s top scorer, Dwight Gayle, could decide matters.
Wed Dec 14: Wigan v Newcastle (7.45pm, Sky Sports 1)
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jussi Jaaskelainen (Wigan)
“As you’d expect from a man in his 40s, he’s got plenty of experience. That’s hugely important to Wigan, who benefit from his calming influence between the sticks.”
PLAYER TO WATCH: Dwight Gayle (Newcastle)
“The Championship’s top scorer brings a restless energy to Newcastle’s attack.
His link-up play is good, he works hard running in behind to keep defenders busy and is being rightly rewarded with the goals he’s getting.”
After Friday night’s embarrassing behaviour, you may also be amused by what David Prutton has had to say about our friend Henri Lansbury…
Sun 11 December Derby v Nottingham Forest
PLAYER TO WATCH: Henri Lansbury (Forest)
“Forest’s main man, as he has been for the past few seasons. He seems to revel in that role, leading by example as captain.”
